Default NGD: Wildkat

I just picked this up used, though in like-new condition. Pretty sweet sounding guitar, and the setup is just right! No Bigsby on this one.

I used it for the second half of the song I posted today in the Show and Tell section:

https://mcmakinmusic.com/track/1522236/mosquito-coast

The first electric in the song is my Dano 59. After the acoustic, I use the Wildkat to finish up the song. Great vintage vibe!

Thanks! Yes, it's a fun guitar. I'm not much of a loud player, but I have my fun!

As a heads-up to anyone that interested in some very authentic sounding 1950s rockabilly tones, try the Wildkat with some flat wound 12s. I am currently using the XL 12 flat wounds and they are heaven for that 50-s tone. Of course, you won't be doing a ton of bending with these, but they are very good sounding strings.

Ahh, you've finally made the discovery ; IME any old-school style electric sounds better with the strings they were originally shipped with back in the day - flatwound 12's (13's for my full-size jazzboxes) have been my go-to strings since 1964, and only in recent years have I (reluctantly) gone to lighter gauges as a concession to age and continued playing comfort. In case you haven't tried it already, you can drop the action much lower with flats (something all those jazzers and rockabilly cats knew back in the '50s) - they won't rattle and buzz against the frets like roundwounds - and if you go with 11's (my current compromise gauge) on that 24-3/4" scale, you might be very surprised at not only how much bending you can do, but how much smoother and faster your lead work will become...
