Putting rosin on a bow
I just watched a video on how to put rosin on a bow. I wasn't getting clear tone and I thought that I wasn't doing it right. I wasn't. I had scored the top of the rosin a bit, but that wasn't enough. The instructor in the video said to use sand paper to get the gloss off of the rosin. Yes, world of difference. Rosin is actually going on the bow now in good quantities and the violin finally sounds like a violin. Now to learn to play.

Rosining the bow properly is the kind of stuff you pick up from a few lessons from a good teacher.
Careful with the sandpaper; if you introduce grit to your rosin then you'll greatly decrease bow hair life. When I was playing fiddle a bit a re-hair was about $75 and I'm sure it's higher now. The best tips I learned from seasoned players was to first research and get a good bow. This usually ends up being a lot more than the violin! Second, get good strings, if you're used to buying guitar strings then be prepared for a shock. |

My wife is a professional cellist, do NOT use sandpaper to rough up your new rosin (as mentioned above)! If you really need to scratch it up, use something solid, like a knife, but just scraping the surface. A few runs with the bow hair at tension should do it though.

There ya go. Just make sure there's no grit stuck on the rosin, for the sake of the hair.

I see you are in Orange County. Some of my best summers was spent with friends in the Monroe area as a kid.

I’ve found that the best thing is another player’s already-rosin-laden bow. I teach orchestra students and always use a spare bow to get everyone’s rosin started. That poor donor bow is so dusty after, it’s pretty much just used for that now!

Could you use a metal fingernail file to rough up the rosin?
