I'm switching back and forth between the Mentalist and Covert Affairs. Both have some action and suspense but are also light hearted (not dark shows).

I just finished the first season of Ted Lasso on Apple TV+, and I HIGHLY recommend! I’m also on a Kevin Costner kick right now and just started watching Yellowstone — so far so good!

The 4th season of Unforgotten on PBS. Best season so far. And I liked the first three.

Mr. Bean. I put it on last night on Amazon Prime. I bought the complete DVD set back in 2005 (give or take a year) and figured it was time for a light laugh.

Anybody else watching "Shameless"?

Laugh out loud funny, although the degree of debauchery can be over the top sometimes.

William H. Macy is a hoot as the drunken patriarch of the family. And the girl who plays his oldest daughter, Fiona, is terrific.

Unhappy

My in-laws (who have been retired since 2003) came up to stay with us for about a month and took ownership of the television remote. On some days the television was on from 7am until midnight. The jewel of their repertoire was “El Señor de los Cielos” - or as my mother in law says “Señor Cialis” - and not just because Hispanic crime lord soap operas in Spanish are racy.

Personally, I’m waiting for season 6 of Lucifer and Stranger Things 4 to drop.

I'm a firm believer that life imitates art, not the other way around. I miss good old classic Trek. Though some of you probably remember the 1970s different than I do, I can tell you that it was good decade to grow up in and I credit a lot of that to syndicated television from the 1960s.

That being said, I'm getting really tired of post-apocalyptic and dystopian society series. If I want to watch that I'll just turn on the news.

This isn't a rip against "nu Trek" (which IMO is still an abomination of the original and will only watch highlights of or check out from the local library once it hits DVD) but of other series that I found I had to muscle through uncomfortably with little to no payoff when the series ran their course. It's getting to the point that I can barely get through a pilot with the exception of "The 100."

This series is my current burden and I'm 3 episodes into season 6. Each season leading up to this has ended with a cliffhanger of some cataclysm world-ending event and each year some McGuffin is pulled out to save what are some truly deplorable characters. When season 5 ended, the world ended - again and I wondered what would come of it. Well season 6 branched out into a truer Sci Fi show but two episodes in again came those dystopian sociological tropes and I find myself thinking I either need to take a break or quit the show altogether even though I'm not even near "the end" of its 7 season run.

On a different note, this week my wife and I watched the end of two series which had entertained us greatly: Lucifer and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The final seasons of both seemed to be rudderless - which IME is a sign that the shows have run too long - but the finales were actually quite good albeit final.

PS: one literary device that I am getting quite tired of is the use of time travel to prescribe the idea of fate. Such use of the device literally tells you how the story is going to end. What is supposed to engage us? It's almost as bad as "prequels" and reboots, two other concepts that IMO have produced unfulfilling and crappy programming. It's just pure lazy.

I watched Red Headed Stranger, night before last. It hasn't been available for a couple 3 years and now it's on amazon prime.

I'm still watching the Mentalist on AmazonPrime and Schitt's Creek too. I finally gave it a chance and it's funny.

Default SEX EDUCATION!

Sex Education's third season is out today on Netflix. I'm gonna gobble it up. If you're unfamiliar with it, it's a British show centering around a boy who, alongside a girl with whom he has a will-they-or-won't-they relationship, runs a sex therapy clinic at his high school (or whatever the British equivalent is). Just a great, open-minded show. I started watching this at the beginning of the COVID shutdown, and have been waiting for what feels like forever for this next installment. This is Christmas in September for me.

My wife and I are currently watching both Peaky Blinders and The Last Tango in Halifax on Netflix.

I'm enjoying both series, but Peaky's gore and depiction of sexual violence has gone too far for me on occasion. It shares a lot of elements with the series Boardwalk Empire as a depiction of early 20th century organized crime, albeit in a British rather than American context.

Tango's been a delight of comedic drama, with a great script and storyline, and top-notch acting with the likes of Derek Jacobi, Anne Reid, Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker. Between the laughs and tears there's a poignant undercurrent of social relevance that makes this series special.

My wife and I love Peakey Blindahs but yes, it's pretty dark. Alfie Solomons kills me though. He so funny.

Ted Lasso. It is as good as I was told it would be.

The Premise. I have watched two episodes. What is absolutely clear is that this is not nearly as predictable and formulaic as most of what is on TV, and if for no other reason, it is worth watching for that. It is also a bit more emotionally complex and covers a wider emotional range than most TV programs. Still not clear whether I like and respect it, or whether I REALLY LIKE IT and respect it.

If you have Amazon and like real good hard Sci-Fi, you should watch "The Expanse."
