Reverb and EQ for outdoor gig?
I have a gig at the weekend which is in our town square. It all old stone buildings and outdoor coffee shops, and my first item playing this kind of open environment - no stage at all, just playing sat down in front of the statue of Lord Palmerston.
Its basically a busking gig to help promote the local annual music festival. I'm taking a Tonedexter2, an Empress Para EQ deluxe and a Neunaber Illumine reverb which will feed to a short pole-mounted AER Compact60. I play fingerstyle acoustic with no vocals, and this is my first time busking! I'm thinking that too much or any reverb is going to muddy the sound. Would that be right? Any EQ considerations? Any help and tips would be great!! Cheers, Colin |

Get the amp up off the ground and keep the reverb to a minimum (less is more) and EQ it on site as needed for your listening pleasure. Start your soundcheck with everything zeroed out. Again, less is more.

Yep, the amp is on a stand about 1m high.
Pretty much what I thought about the reverb, thanks. |

Worked out fine and didn’t use much reverb.

One thought from having played upright bass outdoors a lot; our perception of bass fullness is quite different outdoors than in a room. If you're playing a style that depends on augmented bass (as many modern guitarists do), it could be tempting to crank up the bass on your amplifier to try and hear more bass depth outdoors. But you need a serious amount of amp and speaker to project adequate deep bass outdoors (think Notting Hill Carnival), and cranking the bass on a smaller amp tends to just eat up your headroom and make everything sound bad. So you have to get used to having a leaner low end and just focus on getting things as clear and audible as you can in the circumstances.

Haha [emoji4] I’ll get a sub for my next busking gig. And a 10kW PA too. [emoji23] they’ll hear me in Notting Hill from here. It’s only 70 miles away….
