Default "Black" nylon strings.

Hey Everyone. The past couple of days I was at the local guitar shop playing a used La Patrie Collection (solid cedar top, solid rosewood back/sides). It has a new set of strings and the G-B-E strings were black (not from dirt). I asked the sales guy and he thought they were extra tension strings.

Anyway, does anyone know what the black strings might signify? Are they extra tension? Perhaps multiple manufactures have G-B-E black strings for different purposes but I'm guessing not? Thanks.

Looks like D'Addario sells "EJ32 Folk Nylon" strings where the treble strings are black and the bass strings are silver wound. That may be what I was playing.

La Bella has black and red trebles in their "elite" flamenco sets. Normal tension.

Thanks Hunter. These had no reds, just 3 black treble strings.

D'Addario lists their black nylon trebles as "mellower" than standard nylon strings:

I use La Bella 850B-HT strings - been using them for years. They are a high tension set with black trebles and bronze-wound basses. The black trebles are thinner than standard clear nylon. Great strings that sound good, last a long time and well-priced.

I'm guessing the guitar is strung with D'Addarios but it's only a guess. I think I'm going to buy the guitar tomorrow.

I've used the D'Addario "Folk Nylon" EJ32 black nylons in the past. They were just fine but not as full sounding as my usual D'Addario Pro Arte Composites hard tension EJ44C. They look cool though.

Thanks Mooh. I'm guessing that is what is on the La Patrie I played. I'm going to ask the salesrep.

La Bella 900W Golden Elites also have wound G, and the 900s have "gold" trebles. I just recently switched to La Bella and love the tone! Next time I order strings, I'm gonna give the 900B (black trebles) a go.

The best thing about La Bella is they are polished and will not squeak!

Yes they are!!! More choices, and half the price of the Thomastik-Infeld CF127 Superlonas I was using! And much easier to find online, too!
