That way you can still buy just one more before it's excessive. Of course, once you buy that one, the formula remains the same.

Another popular formula is:

eg = n - 1

where n is the number of guitars owned by the person you know who has the most guitars of anyone you know. That way you can be like, "Well, it's not as many as Joe Bonamassa owns, so how can it be excessive?".
I think excessive guitars is an asymptote ... it never reaches that number.

So, infinity + 1?

This is it. You might have too many guitars if...

- you've lost count

- someone pulls one out and you remark, "Is that mine?"

That's beyond infinity - the stings on the +1 must be buzzin'.

Well if you're Steve Howe or some other pro with diverse musical taste you might need 30 or 40 guitars to ply your trade, but most of us could get by with a handful or so. Of course, there are lots of reasons to collect guitars other than just to stock the sonic toolbox.

Perhaps it’s relative to the size of one’s residence. I can comfortably fit two or three guitars and their cases in my flat. Any more would be excessive as I wouldn’t have room to move about.

I would say the key word here is girlfriend. He's not married... once he gets married then she can complain about guitar 31 and can have an opinion.

What's with all the blaming/trashing the girlfriend in this thread? Seems a little misogynistic.

The seller says he's moving in with his girlfriend. 30 guitars takes up a lot of space. If you were moving in with someone and they brought 4 pianos or 10 wheelbarrows or 500 pairs of shoes or something else that took up 30 guitars worth of space, I'd guess you might talk about it with your partner. That's what couples do.

Plus it just seems like a throwaway line, and not at all the real reason the seller, Brian's Gear Outlet, is selling the guitar. This seller sold 4 other Pono's in March, and seem like a dealer to me.

Maybe it's supposed to be lighthearted locker room banter, or something, I don't know, but it just seems kinda like people have a chip on their shoulder. It works both ways, who wants a boyfriend who when asked about their 30 guitars their first instinct is to break up? Ponder that.

It's all arbitrary isn't it ? I suppose one could ask the same question "Is 2 guitars excessive ?" after all you can only play one at a time

You're right, Kev. It's arbitrary and subjective. I don't find 30 guitars excessive.... but I think that eating 30 (or 70) hot dogs at a food eating competition is, lol. I'll stick with the guitars.

Even 30 hot dogs and I be dead. Which seems bit excessive to me also.

Some months have 31 days in them. Sounds like he needs to increase his guitar collection, not reduce it.
