Default NGD: Goodall Concert Jumb

Many years ago I wanted to get a Santa Cruz OM, but fell in love with a CFox Concert (00/000) with Sitka/Rosewood and got that instead. I love it. Later on I got a CFox Dread (also Sitka/Rosewood) that sounds awesome, but I never bonded with the dreadnought size.

I decided to go for a different larger body guitar and thought that the SCGC OM Grand was a perfect size. Although I loved the size, the rosewood body was just too much of a good thing for me, with so many overtones it was too rich for my blood.

After playing a bunch of SCGC guitars, I tried some Goodall Concert Jumbos. Their Adi/mahogany was awesome, but the Adi/koa just spoke to me. In the past, koa guitars never thrilled me despite the great looks. This one was different. The body size gave great bass & treble, and the koa gave the middle punch. It had what I liked in rosewood (lots of depth of sound), but not overwhelming. The top stands up great to hard strumming.

I was sold. I played a half dozen other guitars just to be sure, but pulled the trigger on this Adirondack top, koa back & sides Goodall from their Fort Bragg shop. Jean at Goodall answered questions quickly, and Sylvan in Santa Cruz were awesome and helpful during this Covid period. My #1 shop is Gryphon, but Sylvan is right up there with service and selection. We’re blessed to have these great local shops, and I’m happy that I can support them.

Welcome to the SF Bay Area Goodall club. They are quite remarkable guitars, so alive and resonant. I've played quite a few of them, but never an Adi/Koa combination. Enjoy in good health.

Congratulations!!! What a wonderful guitar... my favorite size/shape of Goodall...

Just so happens that I'm about a week away from being a Goodall Concert Jumbo owner; I had a beautiful Grand Concert for 9 years, but as much as I loved that guitar (James and Luke built it for me!), it always felt just a little too small for my body and style of play...

Fortunately, the GC is soon to be on it's way to a new home, and, thanks to this remarkable community we have on the AGF, one of our members is parting with his Concert Jumbo Cutaway, and it will soon be on it's way to me!

I LOVE IT when a plan works out!!!

Enjoy your new Goodall; James and Luke build VERY special guitars and are my favorite of all the different builders whose work I have sampled...

May you play it for many thousands of hours, in both good health and circumstance!!!

play on----------------------------------->

John

I looked up the size, 15 7/8" wide and 4 3/4" deep and it looks absolutely superb too!

Per Jean Goodall, the Concert Jumbo is 4 3/8” deep. Whatever it is, it feels and sounds great.

Gorgeous and it must sound great too. I bought a Sitka/EIR GC a couple of years ago and loved it from the first pluck. I ordered a walnut/Adi TW-000 about a year ago and it is powerhouse with angelic tones. I expect you will have a lifetime guitar. It looks like you have a guitar with an impeccable build!

The Goodalls are famous for doing Koa "right". Though mine isn't Koa, I have always been delighted with it. There is no prettier American wood than Koa.

Just a note on this - My Goodall GC measures at maybe a hair deeper than 4 1/4", like maybe 4 5/16". It's hard to tell as I only have a tape measure and my aging eyes! I would be surprised if the larger CJ model is only 1/8" deeper. 4 3/4" seems more in keeping with the other small jumbo models I have known.

I'm sure you will love your new instrument!
