Sweet! Congrats! Some years ago I was into vintage electrics, especially Fenders. From ‘79 until ‘02 I owned a ‘58 Strat and sold it in ‘02 for good bucks. Have been pretty much justifying my gear purchases from the proceeds ever since. I’ve never owned a vintage acoustic, but lately have been pining for a vintage Martin and your D-18 fits the bill for me. I suspect I’ll own one at some point as my next guitar.

It became supper time when I was typing my post in this thread and
I forgot to ask about the binding...

That's nice, what is that stuff? I'll have to look closer at
some d-18s next time I'm at the guitar shop... is that
typical binding?

It’s called tortoise celluloid. An imitation of tortoiseshell. I like the look. D-18s came with a variety of dark or black body binding depending on the year. Some modern prewar style guitars do it too, like the Preston Thompson D-MA.

From a umgf post:
“D-18's had black plastic binding from 1934 into 1936 and then switched to tortoiseshell celluloid binding in 1936, which continued until 1966 when black plastic returned.“
