Okay, I lied ~ one more Martin thread
I've been trying to find a shop within driving distance in my area that has both GPC 28e and a DC (or HDC) 28e in stock so I could compare them directly, back to back. No luck so far. So I'm hoping I can benefit vicariously from y'all's experience here.
Have any of you played both a GPC body style and a dread with the same woods/construction? I'm *assuming* just based on dimensions that the dread would have more bass & volume. But how much so? And how does that translate into the overall visceral playing experience? I'm strongly leaning towards the GPC-28e. It ticks a lot of boxes for me and might just be perfect for what I do ... but I have this (perhaps irrational) nagging image of going to some hypothetical unplugged jam and getting utterly buried by a bunch of dreads, lol! :o Then there's this vid, which makes the GPC sound more open & fuller than the dread, at least to my ears, through headphones: I know, I know ~ online videos. But when you can't try 'em out in person, what else can ya do? Post threads on forums, I guess... Anyway, I'd love to hear from folks who've had some experience with these body styles. (And apologies for the repetitive posting ... I'm blaming it on the pandemic, and not on my CDO* personality.) *CDO is exactly the same condition as OCD, except that the letters are in proper alphabetical order, as they should be. |

sounds like you really want both. so if you can only buy one guitar, start with the GPC-28 since it's more versatile and save up and if you're convinced you need a dread, buy a D-28 (or D-18 or HD-28 or D-35 or whatever is to your liking) or buy something totally different like a Gibson J-45 for something a little different...the world is your oyster.
here's another online vid of comparing the two you're looking at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=athsRt74rAY very raw audio and volume-wise they sound the same, but tonally the GPC's treble seems to cut through better than the DC to me. GPC body is also a little easier to play from a size standpoint. |

Tone wise, the gpc and dreadnought are not even in the same ballpark. Whether the gpc is right for you is preference, but definitely p,ay them both before you decide. Also, don’t rule out the gpc-35. I do prefer dreadnoughts, but the 35 was the best sounding gp to my ear.

If you’re in a jam with a bunch of obnoxiously loud pickers banging away full throttle while you try to take a break, the body shape and size of your guitar will matter very little. If you want to play the loudest instrument in an acoustic setting, play the banjo. Frankly, I think that’s why a lot of people end up picking on a banjo. Talk about the ability to cut through a mix.

I appreciate the responses, y'all. Thanks! I do think I'm leaning towards the GPC ~ partly because I've been playing a slope-shoulder dread for 25 years & would like something different ... partly because (as best I can tell so far) it seems like the tone might be a little sweeter, a little more open ~ as good for leads as fingerstyle & chords. If anybody else has any thoughts on comparing these body styles, though, please post up! I'm still pretty up in the air, even if at the moment I'm leaning towards the GPC. |
