I remember Kays being sold as Airline Guitars at Monkey Wards, I also remember my first electric guitar very well, my only childhood memory that is was sad. The neck had started twisting and became unplayable after a few years. The kuality of the wood used for the neck was rather kuestionable.

Actually most Kays were okay, it was the period in the early 70s, when the then owners were slapping the Kay brand on some of the Teiscos that weren't very good.

I had a couple of those in my hands back in the days when I was starting out. They were uniformly UN-playable, impossible to tune and sounded like a dog vomiting on a very expensive rug.

The Kays that are Kool are the old jazz boxes with the "Kelvinator" headstock; those were actually decent for roots blues, jazz, etc. I also hear that their early stand-up basses are quite sought-after.

I have a Kay Mercury with the Kelvinator headstock. It dates from '62 through '65 according to catalogs I have found. I got it in 2008 and it has held up well. It's very playable although it could use new frets. And a fret job would probably cost more than the guitar is worth

My first electric was a Kay, mail-ordered. Even at sixteen years old I could recognize a POS when I saw it. Got rid of it immediately.

LOL.

When I was about 15 there was a flood that put about 2 feet of water in our basement. My Kay, which was a semi hollow with a bigsby and cheese grater pick ups, was turned into a misshaped mess after it completely dried out. I'm one of those who thinks all guitars are sacred, but when I saw that I laughed with glee, I was so happy to throw away that guitar that I always hated so much into the garbage can.

And it's sold already.

Quoting myself to show the guitar.

Obviously, it isn't an electric guitar. I just thought I'd post in the section to show that my 'Kwality' Kay has held up over the years.

The latest issue of Guitar Player magazine has a review of three new Kay models. I didn't realize that the brand was back...

Airline is another brand that has been brought back too.

I remember around 1990 when I started building and repairing guitars I used to buy these kind of guitars at yard sales for like $5 bucks just to learn how to work on guitars. I guess after the White Stripes things changed
