With the exception of one song - "Drunken Hearted Man" which is in drop D tuning, the others are in standard.

Hey Toby, just wondering whether the Robert Johnson tabs are intermediate-guitarist friendly? I can play some fingerstyle, but I'm just getting started on acoustic blues.

Yes, they are designed for the intermediate up to the advanced student.

I'm in for the Robert Johnson stuff. There are some interesting songs there that I'd like to get into. Thanks

I took what I learned from Toby and posted a few of my own tunes. Its a lot of fun making up your own "old time" blues. But now its time to go back to work on Hideaway and the other great tunes I bought from Toby so I can learn more and then use what I learned. His arrangements are a lot of fun.

I'm working on "When you got a good friend"
It's a really nice song, perfectly in my range with a capo on the 2nd fret. I've got the basic song down, going to memorise it and then move on to the "ideas" part. I have been learning a lot of songs recently (only started the guitar in May) and this song is just what I needed. I wanted some general instruction on the structure of delta blues and how I could fit licks into songs etc instead of just learning note by from a tab. I even went to a teacher for a few weeks but he didn't provide what I wanted. Thanks Toby, exactly what I needed. |

Still working on Generosity Rag. Having problems with the C to C#dim7. I can't get smooth change so have dug out my drum machine to help me keep time.
Also having the occasional dip into fingerpicking freedom as well. |

it's a tough change no doubt but like all of them it's a matter of muscle memory. Yep... 1000 times... and then another 1000. No magic bullet... it's how we ALL do it, including myself.

Hideaway is still kicking my butt. I can run through parts 1 and 2 at pretty close to performance speed, do part 3 slower, but measure 7 is sticky - have to do it a billion times, part 4 (Peter Gunn part) is easy except for that B and A change down in measures 9 and 10 - half of the trick to measure 9 is fretting the last note of measure 8 (G#) with the index finger to set up the transition to the B. I'm getting it but it will take a while. After that tho its the solo parts, fairly simple, but the trick to them is keeping that bass going good which gives me trouble. This is a fun tune. I should have it sounding half way musical in a few months, lol.

That Peter Gunn part is difficult but you may have an easier time of it if you isolate the different parts and think of them as 'chord shapes.' In other words, we all learned out chords as shapes and mastered them by changing our fingers around all at the same time instead one by one. That's the approach I'd suggest with this.
Keeping the bass line going with the solo is also difficult but I'd suggest doing some easier exercises at first. Start with the bass all by itself until you don't even think about it. Then try adding one or two notes on top... keeping it simple... and do that until it becomes automatic. After that try a different group of notes on top and work with that the same way. Then go back to the solo part and treat each new 'lick' as a new exercise.

Been working on "When you got a Good Friend". I have most of the intro down, and the first verse. I play with my bare fingers. I seem to be struggling getting a good sound out of my thumb on the rhythm in the verse. A lack of volume. When I do try a thumb pick, which usually last only a couple minutes then the sound from the thumb overpowers the fingers. ( I do palm mute )
