Default "For the Money" Pffft

This phrase has started to rub me the wrong way - "For the money". Can't we just say a guitar is a nice guitar without this pre qualification? This term is constantly thrown around every time someone posts about new guitar or asks a question about any typically mid priced brand (insert brand name here). Having said that I own a couple Epi Masterbilts and L Series Yamaha along with an HD28. The Masterbilt/Yamaha are the daily players and in all fairness are set up better and easier to play than the HD28. But having said that, they sound fantastic! No need to say "for the money" here. Just a bit of a pet peeve.

Nothing wrong with saying that. Most people appreciate a good value for their money, and people also understand that when you’re shopping budget-conscious, you have to make some compromises here and there. Hence the term “for the money”.

I personally use the term when I’m describing a sub $400 guitar, because at that budget level you’re making some serious compromises, usually on tone and fit and finish.

It adds a bit of information to the discussion, IMO. There is one set of expectations for a $400 guitar, and a whole different set of criteria for a $4000 guitar. I have played a few sub-$400 guitars over the years that I would not trade for big-name instruments costing 10X as much. That is the outlier, but still a real experience.

I've bought 2 guitars this year.
Both maple jumbo's.
Very different from each other.
Both are great to play.
One cost 10x more than the other.
The more expensive guitar is superb, as expected for the money.
The cheaper guitar is fantastic and incredible value for the money.

No need to defend one's buying/playing decisions to anyone else y'know. I have several acoustics, from $4000 (Martin OM Custom) to $1000 (Eastman Adirondack dread). All of 'em are pretty good for the money.

Certainly no personal affront here but in many cases in reads as a bankhanded compliment of sorts. Espcially when mentioned in the context of a new guitar post and the reply reads good guitar for the money when the OP is jazzed about a new aquisition that may be as good as they can afford.

There seem to be a lot more $400 "for the money" guitars than $4000 "for the money" guitars. I realize that it's a budget-oriented statement, but also a bit of a double standard --- and unnecessary, IMHO.

I've played a few Somogyi Mod Ds that were pretty good for the money.

...easy to understand the dislike of the phrase but equally easy to dismiss/ignore it whether buying or selling...otoh...from a sellers point of view it’s not unreasonable to point out the value....and from a buyers point of view the affirmation of a good buy may be a selling point...sure sounds better than”what do you expect for the money!!??”....or...”hey it’s got all six strings!”...

...all that to say it doesn’t bother me...

"The bottom line is" that hoping certain often uses phrases will go away is just "blue sky thinking." "Good/Great for the money" is an often used phrase when describing guitars, but I agree that it can add some information. I often post reviews of guitars I own. I expect more from an expensive guitar than one that costs (significantly) less. I expected more when my Gibson LP arrived than when my Epi LP Special II did, and my expectations were well founded. Still, there were aspects of the Epi that were better than I expected they might be. There is a (really) long list of things that annoy me. My best strategy for dealing with over used clichés is try to ignore them. Just my "two cents."

I am simply offended! Yes, offended....

Now, who do I sue? Where can I find a good lawyer for the money?

To me the person is just saying his evaluation is taking the price into consideration, and is useful for the whole range of costs.

For example, a 10,000 dollar guitar might be pretty good, but not pretty good for the money.

I prefer the phrase to be stated rather than having to guess if they are evaluating the guitar for its price range.

When people purchase things they make decisions and it's a tradeoff of cost versus item/quality/features.

You cannot discuss one one fully without discussing another.

I could always say some purchase is fantastic while not considering that it cost a million dollars.

The conversation is *ONLY* valid when considering cost because it is a purchase which is entirely a financial topic.
