Default Does this shure sm81 looks fake?

So I found this one used for sale at a good price point.
But he does not have the original fiscal note.
And it doesn't come with the original case.

Loads of fake shures being sold around here.
Some say that the "garbage" icon on the connection is indicative of a real one, but it's hard to go for it only based on that without the case and the note.

I can't imagine why people would make fakes of inexpensive microphones. There wouldn't be much money in it. For about the same price you could make a fake Geffel or fake Schoeps and put a lot more change in your pocket.

Most people don't know Geffels and Schoeps...
Just sell a load of them on a country with ultra high prices on import goods
and you'll be fine.

If it's a fake, it's a real good fake

It looks like every other sm81 I've ever used. They may be inexpensive, but they are solid mics.

Thx.
I'll probably go for it then.
Hope it will be a big upgrade over the h5 mic capsule.
Are there any better choices in this price range though?
I've seen the at2020 at2021 combo for almost half the price.

Cheap fakes happen (not just microphones) when someone supplying outsourced exterior stuff (like mic bodies and head baskets) cranks out a few thousand extras and sells them out the back door.

The SM81 is a different mic than the AT2020/2021. The AT is brighter, the Shure is more natural sounding.

The 81s are hard to beat for the price. It's one of those "everyone needs at least one (but probably 2)" mics.

Before you buy anything, check this out.

Of course my ear liked one of the more expensive ones, the Telefunken ELA M 260. My wife would shoot me, lol.

I'm really surprised that no Gefell SDC microphones made the Sweetwater list. I have a matched pair of Gefell M300s. For detail and clarity they rival anything on that list. Here's an example of the Gefell M300s (not mine, TNAG's).
