Certainly looks like spots where your finish is beginning to flake. Unless something was put on the guitar's finish that penetrated (which would be extremely difficult to do) it looks like a bad finish job where oil, or something wasn't removed from the surface prior to finishing. What year is it?

The finish is lifting. The grain was not sealed before the finish was applied. That trapped air. A few expansions and contractions with RH and slight temp variations forces the trapped air to expand/push the finish away from the surface forming the visible air pockets beneath the finish. Notice that most of those spots are above pronounced grain boundaries?

As above -

If you are the original registered owner, contact Taylor Guitars CS and send them the pics.
They will probably have you send it in and they can take care of that for you under warrantee.

If you're not, they can do it but will probably charge you for the service - they are the best.

The 100 and 200 series guitars as I recall are not made in El Cajon but in one of their plants south of the border.
Still high quality tho - sometimes woods can get a little oily and finish will not adhere.

That sucks.

As mentioned above, Im hoping for your sake that you are the original registered owner, or if you bought it used, that you bought it from somewhere with a return policy, and recently. Those are pretty much your only chances to get it taken care of without it costing you at least a couple hundred bucks..

Hope you can get it sorted out and not have to pay too much.. good luck

I am the original registered owner of the guitar. I don't recall if I registered my guitar at the Taylor site. Taylor has an EU repair center which is 20 minutes from my house. I am right now sending an e-mail to them.

If it's a new guitar its reason to return it.

It's not properly finished and that will eventually flake off.

I bought it new in August 2011. Will Taylor refinish it or give me the option to get a new one? In case of a new one I might ask for an upgrade and pay the difference.

Normally it's a warranty repair. No replacement unless unable to repair.

It's unusual because it only happened recently.

I checked with our repair team and we think the finish on your guitar is defective.*
It shouldn't come off like it does. Very sorry about that.*

In this case, we usually offer a body replacement. However, the difficulty in your case is that your guitar has a Rosewood veneer on the back and sides and we are not able to build these anymore, due to new CITES regulations on Rosewood.*

I have two other possible options*for you:
1 - we order a new body, with a Copaferra veneer on the back and sides. Copaferra will look very similar to Rosewood. Ordering a new body can take up to 3 months before we receive it here in Amsterdam.
2 - we can offer to take your guitar back to our repair shop and we will refinish the complete body. This can be done within 4 to 6 weeks.*

Let me know what you prefer and I will prepare a service ticket for it.
This is the reply from Taylor. I would prefer a Koa body over Copavera. The other option is a refinish. I am also ask if it is possible to upgrade to a 3 or 4 series if I pay the difference.

They have given you your options. If you want something else, sell the guitar and buy what you want.

Very generous options they are. Great service.

Go for the refinish. Taylor will do a fantastic job... it will look like new!
If you are not happy, then you can sell it and buy a 3XX or 4XX if that is what you desire.

This ^^^^. "Copaferra" is actually 'Copaifera langsdorffii', have not seen or heard any guitars using this Brazilian wood, but Taylor knows what they are doing.
