If only the craftsmanship were better. Sigh.

Default Head stock/End graft

Of all the Bashkins I've looked at (and I have been looking at a LOT of them) - this particular head stock/end graft combination really is the one I like the best. I think the decision to go with the back strip really ties them together, and the little koa accents bring the entire guitar together nicely.

Looking forward to see what choices you made for the back of the neck, or if you elected to keep it plain!

Thanks for your kind words...

I personally view the neck as a structural element and have no plans to inlay a decorative element into it. We may however add a decorative element to the fretboard (tbd).

Default Into the Booth

Michael was able to complete the final sanding of the body and neck and get the instrument into his spray booth for pore filling and sealing. Some foreshadowing of the beautiful figure in the Koa and the contrasting head plate veneer can begin to be seen. Michael should begin the nitrocellulose lacquer process after a week or so. We still may do a fretboard inlay on the 7th or 12th fret (TBD), but that can wait until after the finishing process.

Next update in two weeks...

Congrats Mr. B...that Koa really is cool, so much more black, I will call it spider webbing for lack of what I am sure is a more accurate term, than I have seen in any other Koa!

Thanks Tom.... It is no doubt a very striking set. I have seen many beautiful sets used in instruments. Are you referring to the longitudinal dark ribbon figure or the intense curly fiddleback flame?

Yes, the longitudinal strips, like what we would call silking on a top. Striking and more prevalent than any I have noted before.

Default Beginning to “Pop”

I spoke to Michael today and he related to me that he now has two coats of nitrocellulose lacquer applied to the body and neck and the figure in the Koa is really starting to visually “pop” (the last images were only with pore filler & sealer applied). Hopefully I will have some new images to share on Friday...

Wow that's pretty. I love it when a tree not only decides to be curly, but it goes all out for that micro curl. Just stunning.
Kudos! (To you, Michael and the Koa tree.)

Steve, yes nature is the most compelling artist there is...

This Koa set came originally to Michael from Bruce Creps who described it as being harvested over a decade ago from a fallen tree. It is presenting full curl as a result of being cut dead on quarter. I expect it may present some medullary among brownish/purple ribbon and golden iridescent luster once it is finished and buffed.

Default Do you want to see something pretty?

Michael was kind enough to take some short videos of the guitar with the nitrocellulose lacquer applied (see below)...

The Koa and Swiss Alpine Spruce...

The end graft...

The Peghead...

That’s a great looking guitar. Welcome to the Bashkin family if I had the cash I order number 3.

Thank you..., but not I am not quite there yet for a few months.

I believe that Michael will have the guitar together a month or so from now, but the case from Jeff Hoffee is not expected to arrive for another month beyond that. I always prefer to leave a guitar with the luthier after they string it up to both tweak the set up and to experience the result of their work (Guitars continue to change significantly over the first few weeks in my experience).

Yes Alan, beautiful stuff... The Acacia species is mesmerizing (I also have a beautiful SJ in Australian Blackwood).
