I think he does a fine job. He's not gonna sell me one, simply because I'm not in the market at this time, but if I were and had the money for a Paoletti the review certainly wouldn't put me off at all.
He knows to extend the bar only as far as the string he's playing, rather than covering all 6 strings all the time the way a novice would do. And he knows about bending behind the bar, which is a pretty advanced technique. So he's maybe just being modest with the "I don't play lap steel" thing.

He does say right at the beginning
That he doesnt play lap steel. If I was to buy one I could probably do what he Is doing fairly soon. Like any string instrument it just Takes practice. The paoletti has nice tone.. |

Having never played one myself I don't think he does a bad job

It certainly looks good fun. I could see me losing an afternoon just messing about with one!

Check his other reviews. See the standard he has set for himself.

I saw that review. If I was buying a lap steel I would be concerned about build quality and sound /tone. I would not care about the technique and experience of the person presenting it.
I think he did a great job and made some great sounds. |

I have a sneaking suspicion that those who are fine with the demo don't play lap steel or don't know what one being played can/should sound like. Just for reference here is a random Lap Steel Demo I pulled of youtube

I actually think this is better than the demos with phenoms like Greg Koch (who I love, but he's a good example that came to mind), etc. who are 100x better than everyone else and you can't really appreciate the guitar because the playing is so beyond what most of us can do.
This was actually kinda useful cuz it was so low level that the playing didn't distract. It certainly doesn't do the instrument it's full justice, but it showed the actual instrument well, the sounds were very nice, albeit simple. |
