Default What's your cureent fave acoustic pu system ?

Check out this video and jump to 0:50 seconds and again at 1:50 seconds and you'll (hopefully) hear what I'm describing. The Lyric sounds lovely, but it's missing everything under 160 Hz.

I remain Old School. I love Dearmond 210 soundhole pickups and the P-90 pickups Gibson slapped on the CF-100E and J-160E.

I've used most options in one form or another and I think that the standard UST still works well for probably 90% of situations. But it really depends on pretty much everything else in your particular setting, music style, type of audience, quality of the rest of the sound system, etc. I think that the best quality of sound comes from a dual source system of a SBT combined with a microphone, but in some situations that just won't work. With every pickup there are lovers and haters and there is someone out there playing for a living every night using that system to great effect. But a UST just works pretty well in most settings well enough that they're just about plug and play, you'll get a sound that's ok, it's a sound that people know to expect and sound board operators know what to do with, it works well through most acoustic guitar amps, and the better the sound system the better you'll sound. I have options and if I don't know what I'm getting into or have control over much I bring a guitar with a UST and a PADI just to keep it simple.

Many of us think the Aura VT is just a simplified version of the Aura F1. It gets some good reviews. It gets some mediocre reviews. I prefer the full F1 system, but it is being phased out. Give it a listen and a demo.

I really like your table Dave. It is very useful since people are always asking for opinions. You are entitled to YOUR opinion and others are entitled to theirs. It doesn't matter if they agree or not. I can agree with much of your opinion since I have owned many of those and a few others. If you don't mind, will use your format to give our OP my opinion on my favorite pickup system the Dazzo.

Dazzo by Teddy Randazzo
Ease of Install- Easy/moderate
Modifications- End Pin
Acoustic Degradation- none
Natural Tone- very mic like,
Piezo Quack- none. No matter how hard it's played
Weaknesses- Epoxy is used to attach, no on board controls, EQ modifications necessary to cut through a loud band.
Strengths- no battery, sounds good set flat, select pickups to match the voice of your guitar, microphone is not necessary, small EQ adjustments for fine tuning to the room or speaker, sounds like your guitar. Comes with the Italian jacks that hold your cable in better.

Can't seem to find the frequency specs for the Lyric, but I did quite a bit of experimenting with eq'ing it with an Equinox. There's plenty of noise below 160hz. The best sound I got was some major cutting around 4-500hz and a big boost at 80. There was something to boost there.

The Lyric is great at lower volumes with careful eq'ing. A solo player (maybe duo) could sound superb with the right pa in smaller to mid-size rooms. All bets are off though when you start cranking up and add other room noises.

My (somewhat limited) experience. Don't play out much anymore.

martingitdave,

I like your chart. The only system I'm familiar with it the Baggs Lyric, and I noticed you said you drilled the bridge. I thought it just sticks on there with two-sided tape?

ChrisE, I had a mistake in the chart. I intend to update today when I get back to my computer. Typing too quickly towards the end of the day. :-)

Check out Ken's (SpruceTop's) reviews of the Aura VT system. He has some excellent information in there.

Oh no--do you mean to tell me I found an error on the internet? I thought everything on the internet was true? What is the world coming to? What's next--Bob Dylan playing electric guitar?

Martingitdave is right. There is a lowcut filter. And the lows.also go through a limiter/compression stage

It is written in lr baggs patent. Here is what is written in the Lyric patent:

* The high-pass filter is set around 70Hz (box 10).
* Frequencies between 20 Hz and 250 Hz are sent to a soft knew limiter (12).
* Frequencies between 20-200 Hz goes to a RMS compressor (14)
* Theire is a notch filter at 60 Hz
It is a way to control the bass. Keep it tight.

patent "US2014/0205106A1"

I own both dpa4099g and lyric and I confirm that tons of bass are cut. it enables.to prevent feedback and gain some dynamic.

The only known cure is IR convolution like Tonedexter.
Here are samples

1) DPA 4099G
2) Lyric alone
3) Lyric + IR pedal (simple process)
4) Lyric + IR pedal (Tonedexter patent inspired process)

If you can't hear any difference between 1) and 2) then you should buy the lyric.

Cuki
