Actually if I were in the market for an open back, the Moonshine would be worth a look. You get the Helimount and other Nechville bits in an open back design.

Okay, I find my Pisgah 12-inch Custom Walnut Tubaphone is the easiest of my banjos on which to clawhammer. Great warm walnut tone with excellent playability equals Bliss!

Here's my original 2017 thread highlighting my Pisgah around the time when I received it:

Hi Folks, on this thread a while back I solicited information about various brands of 5-string open-back banjos as I was thinking of getting one. After sifting through the suggestions, I settled on commissioning a banjo from Patrick Heavner at Pisgah Banjo Company in Asheville, North Carolina. I received my banjo a couple of weeks ago and love its tone, feel and build quality. I opted for my banjo to be crafted with a 12-inch Walnut rim with a Tubaphone tone ring, a Walnut neck with a Persimmon scooped fingerboard, a HawkTail tailpiece and Traditional Wire Armrest. The company photos show my banjo prior to shipping at which time I requested Patrick add a railroad spike at the 10th fret, so 7th, 9th and 10th frets are spiked. I highly recommend Pisgah Banjos as an easy to deal with, high-quality banjo company with reasonable pricing.

Noice. I like walnut a lot. My #1 electric bass is a chambered walnut body, my Nechville is walnut resonator and neck, and one of my Rob Allen fretless basses is 5-piece walnut/ebony neck and walnut top (the other short scale fretless is one-piece walnut neck and walnut top over 1-piece chambered swamp ash body.

All those elements figure into the final tone picture in varying amounts, but for whatever reason I've gravitated towards walnut being involved somehow.

For me, walnut seems to yield the warmest, fullest, and most pleasing banjo tone, especially when used for a 12-inch rim. Great for old-timey playing!

this thread is bad for my budget. Pondering a fretless as I'm used no speed bumps on bass and dobro. Also curious about long neck as I already tune a half step flat, would be cool to have Eb available at the nut.

It's always something...

Yes, Nostatic, banjo players can be just as obsessive-compulsive as guitar players when it comes to their instruments. The nice thing about banjos is that players who are even slightly mechanically inclined can do most of the maintenance and repairs with a wrench and screwdriver while guitarists ponder how much it'll cost them to get something done to their ax.

Vega No. 2 - Tubaphone
OME North Star Walnut - Ring
Rickard 12" Maple Ridge - Dobson
Pisgah Custom 12" Walnut - Tubaphone
Bart Reiter Regent - Whyte Laydie
