I totally missed the mic in the frame. The stock Rode VideoMic doesn't have the extender cable, so I made an assumption.

Something else that might be happening is that the video app may be lowering the gain due to the background noise of the stream behind you. Running water is pretty noisy over a wide frequency range. I'd see if you get better results with the same mic distance in a quiet location.

I only got the microphone a couple of months ago, but I've made
several recordings with it... it is quiet even inside...

I got the mic after I tried to record outside on a windy day... that's
when I learned about "dead cats"... Chipotle, do you record with
a cell phone and have good luck with volume? Anywho, I'm psyched
about the normalization idea, cell phone recordings aren't supposed
to be audiophile-grade...

I only use my cell phone for the video. Audio is done through an interface with good mics into a laptop with Reaper. Not as portable, and, of course, quite a bit more expensive.

Another thing to try: Set the phone up, and record two clips: one with the phone mic, another with the Rode set right next to the phone. That will give you a hint as to whether the Rode is just a quieter mic. Definitely get the mic closer once the longer cable arrives.

After recording, normalizing will boost the overall volume. If you can live with the background noise, it will at least let you make a final product that folks can hear.

Hey, it works !

Here's an outside song, wind blowing, dead-cat in place
with the audio normalized to a higher level...

Here's the original too-quiet version...

Thanks!

Great lyrics! I found myself laughing out loud at the normalised clip, where I wasn't hearing the lyrics properly on the quiet one (I checked that one first).

Thanks ... I was being timid with the loudness enhancer setting, I just
made another one, twice as loud as the above normalized one... the
wind is a little loud while I'm rambling on at the beginning, but pretty
much disappears when the guitar starts up...

Hanging around here and learning about stuff I never would have
thought of is the best
