Default Lament for Owen Roe O'Neill [arr. El McMeen]

I recorded this with a spaced pair of AT2035, about 2 feet apart and 10-12 inches from the plane of the guitar, into a Zoom H5.

I used a higher recording gain than usual and this is the first time I had to cut the gain back in Rx 7 (and a bit in Audition as well). I liked not having to pump the gain up (and the room noise at the same time) for a change.

I trimmed the file, did noise reduction, a bit of string noise removal and fade-out in Rx 7 Standard.

I did a bit of eq, including reverb in Adobe Audition. No wav files were harmed during this process,

I tried the "Abbey Road" approach to reverb with this tune. I used a low pass and hi pass before the reverb in the bus, along with a little dip in the middle. Let me know what you think. My playing isn't perfect, its recorded kinda late at night, and the wind was blowing and the sun was in my eyes, wah wah wah,

I used my Larrivee OM for this recording. I also had almost zero "red light fever" doing the "takes" for this. I only did 8 recordings, and 6 or 7 were complete. My goal was to play relaxed, without tension and not really care about mistakes. I just let it flow and it was a better recording experience for that. This recording more or less represents the "real" me. Some warts, some bruises, but something enjoyable for me to play and pass the time with my guitar and gear.

One time through, no repeats.

Lament for Owen Roe O'Neill [arr. El McMeen]:

Thanks Remy!

You can find the score from here. I bought the "ebook" version so I would have it immediately. (plus no shipping to pay for!)

Very nice Barry!

It has a bit of a John Renbourn sound! Very appealing!

I thought the sound quality was superb. I have zero technical expertise in this area but my ears appreciated the rich, clear and clean sound you created. Congrats, Dan

Hi Barry, I have no idea what you’re talking about describing the recording process but I sure like the result!

Yes, the recording stuff is yet another guitar related rabbit hole to fall in to. Its fun though.

Good take and well performed.
About the recording... if you want to avoid the room noise, recording "hot" won't help you that much because the mics will pickup more guitar but also more of everything else.
A 10" distance of mics from guitar is close enough to get a pretty clear guitar sound recorded without the room noise, unless your room is a very nasty sounding one.
Also (again very subjectively) I would've chosen a longer reverb for this type of music/performance.
Nevertheless a very good effort on your part.
Thank you for posting it.

Thanks for sharing! It encourages me to post more. I’ve only been playing in DADGAD and CGDGAD for about a year and have been going through Jim Tozier’s book and El’s. I’ve had my eye on this Lament. Nice job!

I haven't recorded anything now for over a week. I'll have to get the gear out and just practice with the red light on.
