Bruce has completed the primary wood work and has moved into finishing. He applied an old violinmakers treatment to enhance the figure in the Oregon Myrtle. In these shots that has been applied and the body is sealed (no oil varnish yet). The neck has been pore filled and sealed as well. The first coats of oil varnish will be applied next...

Wow! Unless it's an anomaly of lighting, something in that product really brings out a warmth in the myrtle. Assuming it's not the light, is there tint as part of this portion of the process? Or is it just how this product interacts with the wood? Usually myrtle has a much cooler almost greenish cast. This looks really good!

Some of that is uncontrolled interior lighting. I suspect that Bruce will take some shots in outside light and we'll get a better sense of its actual hue.
To answer your question, it is a bit of both (reaction and tint). Bruce prepared a stain using Pernambuco saw dust (colorant) in Ammonia as a carrier/penetrant (also reacts with tannins in the Myrtle). I suspect once some oil varnish is applied, it will look even better...

Default Outside

Bruce was kind enough after applying the first coat of oil varnish to take the body outside of his workshop into the California sunshine so I could see the true colors of the guitar.

The Red Spruce top is beautifully quartered showing little visible runout and medullary rays. The simple, yet elegant curly maple rosette and purflings set off the contrasting Amazon Rosewood binding.

Even under a single coat of oil varnish, the curly figure in the Oregon Myrtle back set can now be more clearly seen also framed by curly maple purflings and contrasting Amazon Rosewood binding and backstrip.

The figure in the Oregon Myrtle rims can be seen in this shot.

A detailed shot of the elliptical sound port, Amazon Rosewood bindings and curly Maple purflings.

Beautiful box. That curly maple purfling looks great and really sets off the other woods. Good choice.

What a lovely set of myrtle. It's fantastic to see all the progress pictures!

Default Coat #2

Here is a shot of the neck heel cap. Bruce chose a piece of Oregon Myrtle with both sap and heart wood so the dark line in the figure will align with the Amazon Rosewood backstrip (left). Bruce is applying a second coat of oil varnish to the guitar this afternoon (right).
