I was a bad influence on the Beatles - James Taylor
https://www.theguardian.com/music/20...a-life-in-song
An open and honest interview with James Taylor. As a teenager I was in awe of James Taylor. He was so tall, slim, was a great guitarist and song-writer, had the most amazing partners. I assumed he had it all and was extremely happy. Things are not always as they seem. We all have ongoing issues to deal with. I find James's openness inspiring.

Yeah?
The Boys had been around the block a few times before you hit town, kid. Seriously? Starting out in Hamburg's red light district vs. starting out on the mean streets of Martha's Vineyard? Those poor Beatles, they must have been shocked . . .

He's talking heroin here though. Hamburg was alcohol and pills. They didn't even smoke weed until late 1964/ early1965 or so, having been introduced to that substance by Bob Dylan if my recollection of Lennon's story is correct. James Taylor had serious mental issues as many already knew and it's good to see him speaking so freely about all this.

Reading that reminded me that I used to listen to the first four or five
James Taylor albums a whole lot back in the late 70s... there was one song (I just used youtube to remember for sure which one it was) Sunny Skies... it has two guitar parts played on one guitar... a chord or two that makes the rhythm and a base run that make the melody... I remember working out the basics of it, I'm encouraged now to go back and try to learn some of it again... -Mike |
