Paul, not to worry. There is a madness to the method. The extra clamps on the treble side actually increase the stiffness on the treble edge of the board. Which as everyone knows, favors the treble response. And conversely, a few less clamps on the bass edge makes for a slightly looser join, which will aid in bass response. My brother has done this correctly, and I only hope he doesn't burn the Thanksgiving turkey because I've shared one of his secrets?

Smile Wow....

John has more ways of massaging a build than most folks have ever even thought of. including me, even after my fourth Custom JK is almost finished!
I was just joking cause the clamps did not appear to match....

But news alert. I played THREE gigs today with my older two JK custom Round Peaks. And NO PA at all.

A couple hours at the historic Descanso Town Hall for their annual Arts and Crafts fair. An hour at a Senior Residence "down the hill" and a couple more hours at my fave Roadhouse gig back up the hill at 6k ft. On Mt. Laguna....

I can not say enough great things about John's guitars!!! If I had to drag a PA I would not have been able to squeeze them all in. And it is so easy to sing when I (and everyone else) can hear the fab guitars SO WELL.

Exactly what John and I have been working towards.

This one will be the best yet, I wager!!!

Woohoo

Paul

You sir are a busy guy. I think your relationship to JK's guitars is unlike anything I have seen. So great that you two can work so well together to design a guitar this is 100% meeting your needs!

Thanks Tom! But John is doing ALL THE WORK. I just ask him for stuff. Occasionally he will tell me it is NOT a good idea, and why. But usually he seems to agree it makes sense, and then figures out how to do it! There is a LOT of stuff going into this one. The sliding neck adjustment is unlike ANY either of us have ever seen, and it is all John's design, I believe. Whew!!!

I am truly blessed to have found such a collaborative MASTER LUTHIER!

THANK YOU JOHN!!!

I am pleased to report no ill effects from yesterday's triple gigs. Whee!

Funny, for 14 years I played all over Alaska (mostly as a singing drummer/band leader). A LOT of the gigs were Six nights, six sets for a month or more. That's 36 40 minute sets a week! A decent band could get TIGHT.

But we only had to set up once and tear down once. Might take a day, though...

I did a few of these as a solo, without backing tracks or rhythm machines, etc. but that was decades ago.

Now I slide into the mostly one hour gigs 10 minutes early and have to open the harmonica brief case and set up the harp rack! And tune a guitar or two. Hahahaha. But there is a LOT of driving, which was not necessary when the band lived upstairs from the gig. But who else would want to live above all that racket?

Peace, out

Paul

Smile Neck carve time today

I was most pleased to get a call from John this morning. Neck carving is occurring as I type.

Due to my age, small hands, number of gigs, (and finicky nature) I have asked him for an asymmetrical slim mod V/ C with very slim shoulders.

And it has the CF Tube slightly offset to the bass side, which will help facilitate the asymmetrical carve.

To me this must be both the most fun and the most nerve wracking part of building, at the same time!

Go John!!!

Cheers

Paul

That sure is one pretty bookmatched peghead veneer ... not to mention every other detail on this one!

Wow--beautiful neck from end to end!

Doesn't even look like it needs any finish!

Getting so close now...

I envy you that you know the exact neck shape you want. I told him I didn't really know and just make it like the others haha.

Still LOVE that ironwood fretboard!

Hey Paul, yes I was joshing a bit. I put three "rolling eyes" under my facetious comment to help realize I was poking fun at some of the crazy notions out there.
There isn't nearly as much voodoo in all this as is sometimes believed....

Smile Voodoo, huh?

Glad I asked! Hahaha. So that is what the rolling eyes mean...

Whatever you gentlemen are doing sure works!!!

And Tom, I just have very small hands and refuse to give in. John says he can thumb wrap this and fret the Little e string! Although it occurs to me he may be rolling his eyes too! Hahahaha. But, No wonder I have to really beg for the necks that work for me...

This is my thread and I will insert another plug for BIG. Stolen from nemoman's new Ben Wilborn Arum post:
"Shameless plug, this is what B.I.G. can do. Kevin did not know Ben until last year's event and now they are embarking on this build as well as their friendship. How cool is that. And if you don't like Ben, he and I both know that is not that unusual, there will be Kinnaird brothers, Sexauer, Kostal, Lamehorse, Rory Dowling from Taran, and Tom Sands there. Maybe one of these will build your dream guitar like Ben is for Kevin"

Except everyone loves Ben... at least I do. (Cindy too)

Folks, if you talk to John about a build I heartily suggest the full "Pablo Package".

And thanks nemoman! I thought about an oil finish on the entire back of the neck south of the headstock, but John's finish is quite protective and pretty too.

Cheers

Paul
