Default Sheeran by Lowden W03 demo

Matt from Eddie's guitars posted a demo of a Sheeran W03. I know there's been a lot of discussion around these guitars and I think Matt does a nice job in this demo:

Wow ..... even Matt can't make it sound good! Excellent playing though! As always!

Is that like saying, "that's a good looking car, for a 1976 Pacer."? For me it either sounds great, or it doesn't. And..............

I was excited for the new Sheeran's but all the ones I've heard on YT and played in person have been far from stellar.

He's a good player, and it's in tune.

I love that half-full perspective ;-)

Funny that he doesn't comment at all on the guitar - like most of the videos I've seen him do! What's the old saying? If you don't have anything good to say...

It sounds like the little guitar that it is. Let's face it - it's a tiny little guitar. I'd like to hear it A/B'd against a guitar of similar size and scale before making any judgement calls. Just because it's a Lowden doesn't mean it's going to sound huge or punch above its weight.

They've got eight at Acoustic Music.org (Guilford, CT) if anyone in the area wants to try them.

I had a Lowden Wee (Walnut/Cedar) for a few years and I couldn't shake the "it doesn't sound like a Lowden" syndrome, as unfair as that may be. I've given up trying for a "like that but smaller," so I guess my McIlroy A30c will never get replaced!

I'd expect the S's to be better than the W's, but maybe not enough.

I'm not a prospect.

I was mildly interested in this new line of affordable "almost Lowdens".

This video turned me off of any interest.

I think it sounded thin, weak and like a toy.

Mostly what I noticed in the video was the amount of prominent string squeak, pick noise and fret buzz. So much so, I'm wondering if the audio in the recording had too much high frequency emphasis; that would certainly contribute to the thin and weak sound.

Also the microphones seem a looong way from the guitar, another way to kill the bottom end and make the guitar sound a bit plasticky.

If I had to mic that one up, my first attempt would be in pretty close, a bit southwest of the bridge. Like I might do with a uke or a mando or a Selmer-type guitar. And maybe with a dynamic or ribbon rather than a condenser.

I thought the tone was cringeworthy. Probably better for chunk blues rhythms, if anything?
