Default Using a 12 String for a 6 String? Fat Fingers!

I have heard that you can make a 6 string guitar out of a 12 string guitar to help with fat fingers that touch strings on either side of the one you want. Has anyone ever done that and if so was it a valuable work around?

Usually 12 string guitars are more heavily built to better cope with all that string tension.

The downside to stringing it as a 6-string is it can sound rather dull and unresponsive as a result of being purposely 'overbuilt'.

A 12-string will work but I think a 6-string guitar with a wider neck might be the better sounding option.

Yes you can. We just discussed this a few weeks ago and several people had done exactly that with great success. Do a search for "12 string 6 string" and you'll at least 5 threads you can read about this in case they don't post up again.

I played my Gibson B52 12-string as a 6 for some years, it worked pretty well. Two of my early guitars were classical, so the extra wide neck was not so strange. The Gibson gets very little playing now that it's a 12 (well, 11) string again. Anyway, worth a try, I'd say.

There are plenty of wide nut guitars on the market. Agile still makes wide and damb wide models. For acoustics there are hundreds of 1.72-1.8 inch nuts to pick from.

Watch a few Redd Volkaert videos and tell me if he needed a wider neck because of fat fingers.

I had a similar problem. I started playing a classical guitar and later a wide necked string. When I started looking for a 6 string a few years later, nothing worked because of the narrow necks. Then I found my Gibson F-25, an LG size body with a 12 fret neck as wide as a classical guitar. They're not too common but are around on eBay occasionally.
