There's a full concert of his from '76 at the capitol theatre on you tube I just found on Friday. What a player.
Yes, that theater has a huge archive of many of our finest folk acts. In poor black and white, but still good enough to relive the moment.

Steve really tears it up on his standard opener, "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie."

It's all your fault, and Steve's

There I was, this morning, slugging my way through a one and a half hour run in the woods by my house when for some reason I thought of Magic Fingers. Next thing I know, I'm singing ''This Hotel Room''........and I know most of the words!!
And, it's still going

As soon as you hang up that telephone

Stick a candle in the window

I'm coming home!

Thank you, and thanks Steve, for the memories!!!!!!!!

That's such a great song, lowrider. Did you ever have the joy of seeing him perform in concert? He was just a blur of kinetic energy.

My favorite line in that song is when he looks in the mirror: "That can't be me in the gorilla disguise."

He and Prine were such great foils for one another.

Thanks for sharing your memories of Steve.

I believe I saw him one time at Club 47 in Cambridge. This was a Sunday afternoon show and you got the tickets from WCAS radio station. CAS was a huge booster for Steve. My girlfriend got tickets every week. We also went out to a farm benefit in western Mass and saw Steve sing 'City of New Orleans'' with Arlo Guthrie.

Yes, Steve was an amazing performer and might have been the best songwriter in the threesome of Steve, John Prine and Jimmy Buffett who all paled around before two became famous and one is no longer with us.

But after the Cubs finally won a World Series, he did finally get that hit record, didn't he!

The only time I DIDN'T see him when I had the chance was my first opportunity. He was scheduled to do a show @ Wittenberg (or maybe it was Wilberforce) University with Kenny Rankin. A huge snow storm hit and I didn't chance the 30+ mile drive (a lot of which was on back roads), not knowing if they made it in...I did get tickets for it. I couldn't find them when I went to see him @ Canal Street Tavern years later, else I would've taken one to get autographed...

Lowrider, I don't remember if you saw the other Goodman post I had going. Here's Prine talking about how Steve had a number 1 hit record after the Cubs won the Series.

John says, "The guy's been dead 35 years and has more hits than me."

Yes, been able to see JP perform, but he's always had a way with words, especially with that song about the happy enchalada!!!

Low, yes, a real classic.

If you haven't seen this, you've GOT to watch it. Here's John's long monologue about the enchilada. For those who haven't seen this, I won't be a spoiler.

If you're a Prine fan, WATCH! He could easily have been a major standup comic.

I had the pleasure of seeing him perform twice back in the 70's. He was an entertainer for sure. Thinking back he did a number that went around "slow it down, turn it down" energy crisis blues something like that. I never heard it again. Does anyone recall the song?

Dad, that tune doesn't ring a bell.

"Entertainer" is the perfect word for Steve. He was more than a guitar player or a songwriter. He had it all.

thanks,
scott

Would love to hear from other Goodman fans who have not yet contributed. Would love to hear if you ever saw Steve perform live.

Thanks,
Scott
