Default Nylon v. Steel Part II

I have been a nylon owner for 4 days now. I've been playing about 4 hours a day and had several occasions to wonder if I made a mistake buying a nylon.

I pulled out a steel string guitar this afternoon.

I did not make a mistake. Lots and lots to learn on technique and finger style but I found what I like. (not that I won't enjoy plain steel strings once in a while) (and not to imply I play very well)

Sat on the patio this evening and listened to a couple hours of Craig Einhorn "Obras" and Eric Clapton "Unplugged" (diverse listening) to confirm the idea. Yep, did not make a mistake.

Welcome to the wonderful world of nylon. It is an acquired taste. Very smooth & refined. Either you love it or you don’t. That's what I enjoy about guitars. There is something for everyone.

I bought a second hand nylon in mid-July and haven't touched my steel-string since. I found an intimacy with the nylon that I can't find with my steel. It's a personal thing, much like boxers vs tighty-whities.

I'm already eying a new classical... leaning toward a Pavan TP-30 or Alhambra 10 or 11P ceder-top.

He's kind of Flamenco meets Classical.

I went back to nylon this summer after many years of steel string. I finished out a busy summer/early fall gigging schedule with nylon stringed guitars and found it much, much easier to sing with a nylon string. I agree about the intimacy with nylon too.

Does that mean that I will be able to sing now that I own a nylon?

I own two nylons and still can't sing. Maybe another one will help?

Third time is the charm! Go for it!

If it works for you I will use it as the excuse to buy 2 more.

It's your strings... you just need the right strings.

Once you cross the line and find comfort with the nylon strings, it very hard to go back. I will occasionally break out my strat and play for fun, but my classical is my go to guitar now.

Now you can understand why there are so many lost souls on this section of the forum searching for nylon string guitars that feel a bit like acoustics! There's nothing like the sound and feel of a good nylon string guitar. That doesn't mean I don't still love my acoustics, but it does mean that a nylon string instrument will have equal pride of place.

My situation has involved a search for the perfect crossover - one which allows me to do the thumb-wrap and has a truss rod -while sacrificing little or none of the gorgeous mellow richness of a classical. At this juncture, I've failed and have resorted back to the old 2" nut width classical, with a Takamine TH5 on order. It has the truss rod, but I'll have to worry about the thumb-wrap later ...

Looks as though I just can't sacrifice the classical tone for comfort!

P.S. I haven't tried the Cervantes mentioned above. Maybe that would have been the answer!

Default Kenny Hill Crossover

Hi Ewalling...

I apologize if this has been suggested already, but I'd suggest trying a Kenny Hill Crossover. Hill guitars have a 2 way truss rod and (IMHO) have fantastic tone and play extremely well. K. Hill guitars are quite respected in the classical community (there are a number of renowned classical professionals who play Hills) and I have never played one I didn't like.

Here is a link to one of his crossovers that may be of interest.

Thanks for the heads-up! Yes, it does look like a great guitar and the price seems very reasonable, too. I have committed myself to the TH5, however; the thing is, I got to play a TH5 some time ago and loved it. Its slimmer profile neck meant that even a few thumb-wraps weren't completely out of the question.
