A number of John Prine songs are some the most simple profound observations of the human condition ever written.

Obviously I agree with Angel From Montgomery and Paradise
But two more I like to play.
"Your Flag Decal Won't Get You In To Heaven Anymore" (as important a concept now, as it was then)

Take The Star's Out of the Window (arguably the best version is by the Paperboys)

Goodman was a supremely gifted acoustic lead player, one of the best of the last fifty years, on top of being drop-dead funny onstage and a helluva songwriter. If you don't recognize the name, he wrote "The City of New Orleans" (no, Arlo didn't write it), voted the best train song ever written by almost everyone. Steve died thirty years ago of leukemia, at age 36. Here is their version of "Souvenirs." The boy could play.
Thank you for mentioning Steve Goodman...he was one heck of a song writer, guitar player, funnier than most stand up comics and is too often forgotten. I had the privilege of seeing him a few times and always left the show smiling!

Two of my favorites that I do not mentioned here are Speed of the Sound of Loneliness and Long Monday (my wife's favorite).

You have good taste. Both terrific songs. As you probably know, Nancy Griffith has a great version of that first one on her covers album, in a duet with JP himself.

On the album Derby thing, the first one is a classic. My second favorite album, however, is Bruised Orange, produced by Steve Goodman around 1978. That one's a keeper.

Here's the first track from that album, Fish & Whistle, live, with Stuart Duncan on mando:

GF, thanks. In a few weeks I will do a separate Steve Goodman Appreciation Thread, which I tend to do about once a year. He was amazing. I'm glad to hear you had the chance to see him. I will never forget the first time I saw him: The Santa Monica Civic, mid seventies. I even remember where I was SITTING. He had this stool beside him with a small glass of wine and kept getting tipsier and tipsier as the set progressed. Just drop-dead funny. To this day, the best solo performer I've ever seen. Nice to know a few of us are still out here.

Thanks for sharing your memories.

Scott

I actually played pinball with him one night at The Earl of Old Town on Wells and North Ave in Chicago. It was an Elton John Captain Fantastic game IIRC

Yes, south west burbs. I assume they are gone...have not been back to that area in 30 years. There were so many great music clubs back in the day.
