The poll should have stated "If you gig". Because its easier with a pickup.

While I don't gig, I voted for electronics, just for the sake of versatility ... (with the general caveat that they are "non-intrusive", as in no big plastic control panel cut into the side of the guitar).

No electronics for me, in fact I generally won’t even consider buying an acoustic guitar if it has a pickup installed. If I need to I’ll mic it, otherwise if I want to play a guitar with a pickup i’ll grab my Tele.

I voted for electronics. I am not a big fan of under saddle pick-ups. I prefer the bridge plate pick-up, such as the K & K. Of my 6 guitars, 4 have the K & K mini, one has the LR Baggs iBeam active. The iBeam works well if I'm on stage with several instruments and need to be heard. It has a volume control. The K&Ks are great for solo or duo playing. I play out just enough that it is handy to be able to plug in. My 12 string does not have a pick-up. But it is big and loud and easy to mic.

No electronics. Don't need them, don't want them.

Here's a little story.

Back in 1999, I finally found my ideal guitar - and extremely expensive (for me) Collings 12 fret dreadnought. It made the most wonderful sound.

The first thing I did was take it to my tech of the time to have the latest electronics put into it which at the time was a Lloyd Baggs Dual source unit with an UST and a microphone with a very heavy "mini" pre-amp-mixer and a small brown kidney shaped control unit which was screwed to the sound hole.
While Ian the tech was installing all this the boss of the shop said to me "That surely is a wonderful instruments and you've paid a lot of money to get that kind of acoustic sound".
He went on "If I were you, I'd get a Takamine which is a guitar not built for its acoustic qualities, but mainly to hold electrics, and keep that guitar pristine and use it acoustically or into an external mic when you need to".

I scoffed at his comments, but no longer.

I do have one guitar with a similar arrangement K& K pure minis on the bridge plate, and an internal mic. I bought it used with the elecs already installed and I think I've used it two or three times since I
bought it in 2012.

One friendly warning. I often see "budget" guitars often sold to women for some reason which are dreadnoughts or super jumbo shapes always with a cutaway, and built in "barn door" electrics, and sold very cheaply.

They are essentially guitar shaped wooden (or laminate) boxes to hold cheap elecs. They are rarely plugged in by beginners, the cutaways are rarely used, and ... they sound awful.
Spend as much as you can afford on the acoustics of a budget guitar - not electrics.

As long as any electronics are discrete with no visible knobs or chunks cut out of the guitar, I don't mind. I certainly wouldn't pass on a good guitar if a pure acoustic version of that model was not available. Generally though I prefer a guitar without.

Guess I will sorta echo SM above me... I have a beautiful 22 year old hand made custom 000 made by one of our better Luthiers, Gerard Gilet. A wonderful instrument that after 20 years I decided to put in a pickup. I wanted absolute minimum invasion of the instrument, so it was a K&K Mini.

I do not regret it, but I have seen more invasive actions in lovely custom instruments because that was the thing...

Then too I have a Maton 808 w' their AP5Pro pickup system and that is a killer live/stage guitar. It aint my Gilet but it isn't meant to be. It is what it is.

So as others have said and I often do also... it depends.

Well ...as stated in some of the other posts. my
guitars are tools to supplement my income. they
all have electronics. Im not a fan of gluing and taping
batteries and volume wheels inside my guitar,
so my rigs are all passive. But I dont subscribe
to the term "purist". It somehow suggests that
one form is better than the other. Electronics just add one
more option for me that "purists" Dont have..If I was in the league of
TE or chet atkins I suppose i could use a mic all
the time. But I play bars and restraunts and pickups
are just a necessary part of my business.
Where i live ,If i want to play, I need a pickup.
The venues available to me where a mic works are few and
far between. I cant afford a stable of fine guitars..sigh.. so the ones
i own all have pups.
If all i did was play in my bedroom i wouldnt need them.

I equate "Purist" to snob. Guitars are tools for playing music for yourself or making money. I luv a nice instrument and its not going to stay in the case, its going with me to play, and I want it to be heard. I encounter more snobs concerning cutaways than electronics.

Everybody should do what they like so I wouldn't presume to judge anyone else but I personally have no desire for electronics in an acoustic guitar and the presence of a pickup of any kind is a dealbreaker for me. I use my telecaster unplugged half the time – the last thing I want to do is plug in my acoustic.

My current guitars don't have them but my next will. I don't perform but I want to be able to plug into my looper for practice purposes and to be able to learn the looper. Primarily because I feel like it makes me a better player.

Two of my 7guitars have pickups. K&K fan here. The most natural sound, IMO.

I do not like factory installed pickups for a variety of reasons.
