When pushed a bit hard, the smaller amps, whether battery and/or electrically powered, may induce ear fatigue which is a harshness of tone that may not be too noticeable at first but can grate on a listener's hearing and nerves after a while. For example, there's no comparison in sound quality between my pair of JBL EON ONE Compacts, whether used singly or together, and my LR Baggs Synapse. Although its tone is decent overall, the JBL EON ONE sounds a bit harsh and also kind of boxy compared to the LR Baggs Synapse's open, clean, and full tone without ear fatigue. Of course, being electrically wall-powered, the LR Baggs Synapse doesn't have the battery-powered, use anywhere capabilities of the JBL EON ONE Compact.

... I thought that it was a "given" that there is not going to be any sort of HIGH volume good sound coming from any of these little amps... wrong tool for the job!

Like Larry said - you want tor each a BUNCH of folks outdoors and REALLY cover the area? You are going to have to be pushing some serious power with some serious loudspeakers...

I assumed folks were talking about little busking gigs and what-have-you...

I'll endure terrible sounding rigs out-of-doors (Farmer's Markets, fairs, etc) just to listen to some really great musicians, and even some lame ones, just to be an encouragement to them.
Me too... in fact that's my database.

I am trying to educate myself here "just in case".

I am generally listening in open areas where the performer is aiming to reach 30-60 people spread out over a 100' radius; sometimes on grass. I am getting the idea that grass is a real sound-killer. The pavement-and-patio performers sound better overall.

I very much appreciate the gear information provided here, because it looks like my turn is coming....

My Cube Street EX is capable of SERIOUS volume levels without distortion. Some "tools" are better than others.
