If you only know JM by his pop songs, do a little searching on YouTube. His ability to play extremely complicated, syncopated rhythms while singing is extraordinary. He is a fantastic blues and jazz player having attended Berklee for a period of time.

Runner ups:
James Taylor, Paul Simon, Joe Pass, Stevie Ray Vaughn
John Mayer has changed quite a lot after his time playing with the dead. I wouldn't say he's quite the same egomaniac guy he was 10 years ago.

Ditto on Clapton, and its not his searing electric stuff I aspire to. I admire him most in his very rootsy acoustic stuff, his great vocal talents, I think thats where his personality shines through. I'm also a huge Bruce Cockburn fan, his guitar playing encompasses a jazzy acoustic flair you rarely hear, and great lyrical content that spotlights his world view. A great performer
who inspire as a musician and human being.

Richard Thompson. Singer extraordinaire (rough voice, but I think he's a GREAT singer using the tools he has), songwriter extraordinaire, virtuoso guitarist (acoustic AND electric).

Neither. But, I am having enough fun challenging myself to go my own way.

Seriously, a good choice. Great player, songwriter and singer and seems like a nice guy.
