Sure! Discounted! That's the ticket.
6 hours old and sounding better, I think. Here's something prettier; "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" |

And then there's the violin, which I strung yesterday.

Bruce--Is that "Wee Small Hours" actually on the mini-D? I would have guessed "archtop!" --Richard

Yes Richard, it is the mini-D! While perhaps not the full on cannon the last one seemed to be, this one is totally up to snuff, and has a wonderful sweetness. I did rehearse with a bassist for a few hours yesterday using the guitar, and we both found it entirely satisfying.
I fretted the archtop today and made the nut and tailpiece, as well as installing the tuners. The bridge is about 3/4 done, being just a saddle short of complete, plus the finessing. It is a fairly typical archtop bridge with adjusting wheels, but has a drop in saddle so that it can use the BlueStick PU that I favor. Tomorrow I am flying to Pittsburgh PA for a Sexauer family reunion, so I won't be able to finish it till Monday. More then! |

San Francisco to Chicago to Pittsburgh on Friday then Pittsburgh to Denver to Sanfrancisco on Sunday with a very exhausted full day of heretofore unknown (mostly) family all day Saturday . . . and still I got the Archtop into playing condition yesterday! I am a truss rod cover away from being able to take pictures, but so far I am a bit distracted by playing on it. Here is "The Talk of the Town" in two tracks with some vocal. And, here is the same rhythm track but with my still somewhat embarrassingly limited ability demonstrating the latest violin on the second track. Actually, discounting several fumbled notes, I am pleased with my progress. The rhythm guitar can be heard relatively well on the violin piece IMO.

I thought I would get around to serious pictures today, but instead I played music all day. Here are some snapshots taken just now:

I started a new guitar today. This will be a traditional classical guitar In Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce.
Notice that the run out reads opposite at either end of the top. I suggest this as an indication that it is near perfectly cut in the center, as good as possible. This is the inside (unmatched side) of the back: |

Going at a relatively casual pace just now, but we do have some progress on the classical:

I was wondering what you would do for bracing the top, that looks interesting. I have been hanging around a classical guitar site and have started a small short scale guitar using a frivolous wood choice that may raise an eyebrow or two.
I am doing a five brace fan top and I had some room in the lower bout outside the braces and thought maybe I should put in a finger brace. Still quite new at this so I thought stick with tradition and go without. Now seeing yours I guess the thought was not all that way out there. Doing a Spanish Foot build for the first time. Nothing fancy, just want to make it playable. Can't wait to see more of yours. That is interesting with the runout and how just below the rosette both sides match each other perfectly. We always learn something from your builds.

In a couple of weeks I will host the September meeting of the Northern California Association of Luthiers (NCAL), which anyone interested is welcome to come to, by the way. I mention this because I do this every year or two for the most self serving of reasons; it forces to clean the shop in the interest of suppressing embarrassment! This often uncovers forgotten artifacts, and today I found something I expect to discover again one day. It is the program for the first Healdsburg Guitar Makers festival. Apparently, some of us treated this little booklet like a school yearbook, and collected signatures, I sure seem to have. Many of the participants are forgotten, at least by myself, but most of the signatures I see have become people I have come to call friends. I knew very few of them before meeting them at the event.
Here are 1996, 1999, and 2001. I will probably find more before the day is out. I am tossing my redundant copies of later shows, of which there are quite a few pounds! |
