Default New Baritone build 1-3/4" vs 1-13/16" nut width?

Hello,

I am having a baritone built and am curious about which nut width to go with.
I have a Paragon with 1-3/4" that is very comfortable and playable for me. I notice on some builders pages that their std acoustic has 1-3/4" but their baritones are 1-13/16" Is there a reason behind this?

Any tips about scale length would be appreciated too.

Thanks, Todd

Baritone strings are usually heavier, so a little extra room at the nut makes the string to string spacing less tight. But that assumes you plan on using baritone strings. Some just have a slightly longer scale, and get played with heavies tuned down a step or a step and a half. The scale (IMHO) should be at least 27-½ to do a good job as a baritone, but 28-29 will let you tune down lower more easily. But its a tradeoff with how easy it is to play. I would really talk to whoever is building it to get their feedback on the trade-off, and you should have a good idea about how you want to play it -

Thanks for the input. I don't think my builder who mostly does electric guitars has done a baritone.

To me - it depends on the scale length, intended strings, your hand size and personal preference.

Mine is 1 3/4 and comfortable. If I were to have one built, I might request an extra 1/16 to make up for string thickness.

The scale is 27 to 28.6" and it's just about ideal.

Full specs, possibly TMI, here:

scale length of 27" would be my minimum.

nut width is a bit harder to toss out numbers on because of string spacing and back of neck profile and depth. also players hand position and style of play.
