Default Rock wool - rigid type

I see there are different types of Rock wool out there. Some online sellers have the rigid type in 48"x24"x2" thick boards. Is this type suitable to stack 2 pieces in a frame?

I've used that exact product before. Works well. It is not as stiff as you might imagine.

The stiffness helps if you need to cut it.

I'd advise just ordering the completed framed panels.

I put up nineteen ATS panels (on walls and ceiling) for about the cost of a microphone. The hassle of building your own panels and adding hanging gear not worth it IMO.

I'd love to order the ready made products, but the shipping $$ is stupid ($40 from ATS). I'm interested in having at least two free standing portable panels which I may hinge together or just leave as singles and stand them next to each other.

I can make 2, maybe 3 homemade close to the price of 1 prefab.

If your handy at that sort of thing no problem, but the ATS panels are nicely beveled and the fabric is good quality. Also even with the finished panels
arriving there was some aroma and some rockwool fibers in the air. Took a week with a room air purifier to get the air quality back to normal.

I just made wall panels, clouds and corner traps for a fraction of what it would cost to buy them and have them shipped. Not as hard to do as it might seem. I used the Knaulf Earth wool in the clouds and wall panels and Rockwool Safe & Sound for the corner traps. I did consider the rigid panels, but the Earthwool seemed to get better results from the research I did. The S&S is much better for the corner traps and cheaper too.

I can let the rock board breathe in the garage for a week or so before I wrap them. Thanks.

I have no experience with that specific product I have used Roxul Safe and Sound in new constructed interior walls as moderated sound reduction (not elimination) and was satisfied with the result

And Yes ,,, I would definitely stack 2 per panel in 1 x 4 pine wood frames

I used Roxul Rockboard for my gobos. The link you provided is for Rockboard 60 which is about the same as Owens Corning 703 (both 6 lbs per cubic foot). I used Rockboard 80; it's a bit better for absorbing lows due to its higher density (8 lbs per cubic foot). If you make your own panels for the best price I'd suggest looking for a commercial insulation supply house that will also sell to the public.

Here are some things I learned along the way in tuning my little studio:

-Here is a link to very helpful data for various materials including the usual suspects of Owen Corning, Rockwool, etc.
Absorption Coefficients (The only material I didn't find listed on this resource was Knauf Insulation-Acoustical Board with ECOSE. You can find that data here.)
This will help you decide what will work best in your space depending on what you are trying to achieve.

-If you haven't done a room analysis you might consider that before you decide what material to use. Here is a video that explains how to do this in a straightforward manner.

-You will need Room Wizard Software, which is free. This link also gives you access to even more information about room acoustics.

You can really get lost in this stuff. It certainly made my head spin, but I don't think you need to understand all of it, just enough to improve your room. May the Force be with you

If in doubt stick up another panel.

The Rockwool products are stiffer than the typical pink fiberglass fluff, but still are a bit floppy, and will come apart if handled roughly. I don't think I'd use them without a frame, but they work fine in a open frame with a fabric covering front and back.

OC703 is much more rigid, Fran Guidry and others have simply wrapped them in fabric without any frame at all. 703 would still bend or crease and even break off pieces if handled roughly, but if you're a bit careful no frame necessary. I did put my panels with OC703 in a lightweight frame anyway.

I'm going to build frames for the stuff and cover with cloth (I have to find out where to buy the cloth and how to measure what I need to order it)
