Sure:
Make a sandwich from 3/16” thick by 1” wide by 34” long cocobolo sapwood (in this case) and .010 black fiber/.030 maple/.010 black fiber, all glued with titebond type 2.

When dry, thickness sand the Cocobolo side to get the exact binding height desired, then rip the sandwich into .085” thick strips.

Run them through the thickness sander removing .0075 per side leaving the standard (my standard) .070” thickness that bends easily and is thick enough to do the job.

Nothing to it, assuming you have an uncle named Bob.

Thanks Bruce, I'm in the process of stepping up from simple plastic binding in my own projects so facing a bit of a learning curve and this helps.

The process I described is fairly typical, I think, except the dimensions and materials are specific to my work. More commonly used as purfling would be veneer around .020 and just a maple strip followed by a black fiber strip. A simple trick of the trade is to virtually always put a black strip toward the outside as it looks super clean that way. Black fiber's advantage is that it holds things together when bending. And though no one has asked why titebond 2 is my choice, it is because it doesn't tend to delaminate when bending with heat and water.

Thank you for the vote of confidence. I have less doubt myself than I once did, this last couple of years have seen an up-leveling of my results that were far beyond my least realistic expectations.

The JB-16 arrived at it's owner's house on Thursday before he got home from work, and he set me a text a little after my bedtime which I hope share with you, if I get permission.
