David & Gillian killing it on the Oscars.
Playing Gillian's 'When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings' they demonstrated a perfect example of 2 people being 1, both in voice & instrumentation. The sound was exemplary, as were their outfits!
And of course David Rawlings has done for the early Epiphone Olympics what Nick Drake did for the early Guild M-20s, for the most part: Bestowed legendary status to a lowly bargain instrument that nobody paid any attention to, and now people willingly overpay for them only to find that they're still not David Rawlings, or Nick Drake. If you think it's the instrument, well then the music failed. If you missed the performance I'm sure it's on youtube somewhere. I'll just leave this here:
He takes a thin, reedy guitar, capos up a lot, and makes it sound perfect with Gillian's old Gibson. His lead is just so wonderful. That's some playing.

No I haven't seen the movie yet.
It seemed like they were in the dark a bit, and almost an addition to the Big Sky backdrop. A *huge* stage like that can swallow up duos. They dominated musically, but it was still a lot of space to own.

So close!
I believe you mean "The Oscars."
Great performance, and the backdrop was perfect in the context of the song's movie. |

That was my favorite musical performance during the show! Loved it. Hopefully it (and Queen) opened some eyes of the pop culture masses who were likely tuned in to what actual music sounds like.
BUT, the Buster Scruggs movie had a couple story lines that were WAY TOO SAD for me! |

Probably the best 2 minutes in Oscar history, IMHO.
A beautifully written song, there is just nothing like Gil & Dave singing together. The Olympic sounds fantastic and the lead break is classic Dave Rawlings. Also, it amazes me how dang good they make $400 worth of microphones sound. 2 regular 58's, 2 57's; and the sound is incredible.

Yeah, very sad, indeed........but how the about Tom Waits vignette?? He is a natural, and I don't know of anyone who's more of a character than he is! His version of 'Hi Ho' is the definition of weird, until you come around to Tom's logic! Best, Howard |

It's so enjoyable to watch two people who are absolutely masterful at what they do.
Also nice to see the Epiphone...been seeing David a lot with an old D'Angelico lately...he sounds great on that too, of course, but there's something about that Epiphone... |
