List of who's not making guitars due to Coronavirus
What builders have stopped making guitars due to the Coronavirus?
I saw Martin, Gibson, Collings, and Santa Cruz. It's not like we'll be going without as their is a good supply on Reverb. Even tiny Santa Cruz who make 500 guitars a year have 400 available (256 new). |

I wonder if that means used prices will start to go up.

What about Eastman?

With record unemployment, I expect massive drops in used prices.

I'm sure many households will be having the "do you really need 5 guitars"? husband-wife conversation. I tend to agree with AZ as a matter of economic reality. Trading will also get interesting!

Not necessarily. The top one percent will always have extra money. And if manufactures stop making new guitars, used ones could go up in price. And record unemployment (say 20%) still means 80% have jobs.

I got an email that Larrivee is closed until we get to go back to work in California.

Delivery of the new Gibson Custom Shop Historic Series 1957 SJ-200 I ordered back on Feb 6th could be anywhere now but it feels strangely trivial given the enormity of COVID-19 and the safety and lives of everyone around the world.
It's just a guitar.

I expect sales for guitars and other luxury products to slow down considerably until we get past this ordeal...

I understand the unemployment situation, the bills pilling up, and the effects that will have, as well as the drop in value of investments. But I have a sneaking suspicion that when this clears up, people, especially those aged 60 and up, will say to themselves “I’m still alive and I see that the future is not guaranteed. So I might as well splurge and enjoy life while I can.” I suspect the relief and joy of being alive will ignite a spending spree among those who can afford it.

I heard that the factory was closed while things were bad in greater China, but I think they are producing again. And on the Eastman owners FB group, they said that there's a container on the water, but not sure exactly what mix of guitars will be arriving.

100% correct. I expect to see a flood of guitars hit the used market in the next several weeks.

Brencat. I agree. 5 months ago I bought a guitar for $3150. Today I'm trying to sell it for $2000. I got an offer on ebay for $1600, and I'm really tempted to take it (I have 15 more hours to decide). Times are tough.

Collings have also stopped production. I was speaking to my guitar dealer the other day about the impact on his business and the industry in general, he was of the view, certainly in the UK, there was a fairly significant stock of most major guitar makes and it would take a while for shortages to show. He was also reasonably busy with online sales.

That's about how I feel right now. I see no point in dying with a positive bank balance.
