Default NGD - Martin D-35

So for the past two years or so, my primary guitar has been a Taylor 814ce (X-brace). No doubt it's a great guitar, but I always found myself having a more "analytical" or "objective" appreciation of the sound rather than an emotional connection.

I'd been watching videos of the Martin Standard Series dreadnoughts recently, and now that stores are open, I finally had a chance to try one out in person. I tried playing a D-28 and D-35, but as soon as I struck the D-35 I instantly fell in love with the sound. The lows have a powerful boomy-ness (as expected for a Martin) but even the highs, while not as sparkling as my 814, have a beautiful clarity. Overall, the guitar has such a richness of sound that I found myself unable to put the guitar down. So I decided to sell my Taylor and buy the D-35. This isn't to say I think the Taylor is an "inferior" guitar; it's an incredible guitar with a beautiful tone, but I think my heart is more with the D-35.

Pros and cons with my new acquisition as usually is the case. I do wish Martin would use wood binding like Taylor does for guitars in this price range and I'm not the biggest fan of the molded 640 case that comes with the D-35, but the obvious pro of the sound outweighs what are ultimately cosmetic considerations. To Martin's credit, this is still a beautiful guitar and I love the three-piece back. Looking forward to playing this guitar for a while to come!

Did you replace the pick guard? They are normally black on a D-35. Congratulations on a fine guitar.

Martin dropped the black for a tortoise pickguard on Reimagined D-35 (2018+).

Congrats! The first Martin I fell in love with was a D-35. Couldn't afford one so the wife got me a D-16GT. Nice guitar, I still have it, but I remember that D-35.

Congrats! The D-35 has been a long time favorite of mine as far as Martins go.

Last week I played a couple dozen Martins and various others in Nashville, and a D-35 was by far my favorite new guitar that I played all week. I came so close to buying it..

Congratulations! I am really wanting a D-35 too. Such a beautiful guitar! Enjoy it! I'm sure your fingers will be sore for the next few months from playing so much.

Sweet, congrats on the 35. Got one on order with the custom shop. If not for covid and the factory shut down I might of had it by now. So I will live vicariously through you...Thanks

Same here. I like my D-16GT but I’d LOVE a HD-35! I’m even more intrigued now. My birthday is is less than 2 weeks. I’m showing my wife the picture of the OP’s - right after I hide all my other guitars!
