Even though I've played acoustic guitar for 60 years, I haven't really owned that many. I tend to buy something and keep it for a LONG time...
I had Mark Angus build me #35, in 1979, and I've loved that guitar for all these decades; recorded with it, gigged with it, traveled all over Christendom with it, wrote many, many songs with it... if I have ever had an instrument that I "would never sell", the Angus is that one... And it's about to go to a new home! Having decided that I want only ONE great acoustic 6 string guitar, I've chosen a Goodall Concert Jumbo... as good as the Angus is, it does not compare to the guitars that James and Luke build. So, the trusty old Angus is going to a good friend, a younger man who I know will love it and cherish it the way I have for all these years... My point is: NEVER SAY NEVER...

Apparently I have nine I'd never sell. Since they seem to have moved in permanently.

My 1984 D-2832 Shenandoah which I purchase new in 84 or 85. I never really loved it, but recently, after I spent some time setting it up properly and replacing the original UST with a JJB bridge plate pickup, it plays and sounds way above what I could ever sell it for.
Now, if someone offered me far more than the average resale price, I might consider selling.

I have learned over the years never to say NEVER. How ever, I would say I would be extremely reluctant to sell a few guitars that I have.

Haven't found one yet, I prefer to try everything that's out there. However, this recent Preston Thompson DMA will be very hard to part with. I have never kept a guitar longer then one year, but I think the PKT will stay.

I have a special Larrivee D-03R that has a lower midrange presence that is probably unique to this particular guitar, as I also have a rosewood Larry D-09 that doesn't compare.

I bought more than forty guitars during the last fifteen years chasing playability and tones right for me...
I still own nearby twenty of them, and cannot foresee any going through the next years, as I let three go the last month. So Taylors 510 (2006) and 322; Larrivees L-03koa and OM-09, Martin OOO-18; Gibsons L-OOTV and L-1 1928 Blues Tribute; nylons Ramirez R-4 and Aria AC-80 as well as Hot Rod tricone are clearly here to stay ! The others are actually mostly devoted to studies in alternate tunings...

I'm probably set for life. I don't picture myself doing any more trading, but I would never say never.
But my 12 string was owned by a family member who died, and his widow gave it to me. So you can bet I'll never sell that one.

These are my untouchables.
Santa Cruz D/PW & B/PW. My wife gave me my D/PW for Christmas 2014 (I had it picked out, too expensive I said, she went and got it!) B/PW, Well, even it if wasn’t the best banjo killer ever, on looks alone, you just want to hold it!

I have 10 really nice guitars, but if the house caught fire I'd rescue these 2 first.
I saved my pennies in 1977 to buy a new Guild D-55. Today It's sounds better than ever, and it's never needed a neck reset. A friend and I travelled to one of those few megacity cities that had a wall of real vintage 1950s & 60s Gibson ES-335s we tried out - all north of $25,000. But when we tried this Gibson Warren Haynes ES-335 61 reissue we both agreed this new guitar had 90+% of the mojo of the best authentic vintage ones, but for under $5K. It's from a series of 500. 335a.jpg This Tone King amp doesn't hurt the tone one little bit. 335b.jpg D-55.jpg Last edited by Tico; 07-07-2020 at 04:05 AM. |

One of things that has resulted from buying and selling guitars over the years is that a bunch of really great guitars “stick” in my collection. It has got to a point that I can’t find one I want to move out in trade. You never know what the future holds, but I have one guitar that I can’t imagine ever selling. It’s a Froggy Bottom K Adi/English Walnut I commissioned 5 years ago. Michael Millard found a Champion Walnut tree that was being cut in Pennsylvania and used it for the B&S. He said it was the hardest walnut he’s ever worked with. It has amazing cavernous depth, ringing trebles and great balance.

I have three that I would never part with:
#1 - A martin HD28 given to me by my wife for our 25th wedding anniversary. We just celebrated our 50th anniversary and the guitar and wife are still at the top of my music charts. #2 - A Lite Ash Telecaster given to me at my retirement by the men that worked for me. Who needs a gold watch when you have something with six strings and a fret-board. #3 - A Taylor 816ce given to me as payment for helping a guitar store owner friend maintain his website. I would have done it for free and told him so but being a class act, he insisted on "payment". When I "shuffle off this mortal coil" I don't care what happens to all of my other guitars, but I would like to see these three remain in the family forever because they represent the love of the people they came from. |
