Default Taylor 814c Recording

Using Gefell M300 matche pair, spaced three feet apart, both a foot out from the 14th fret and the lower bout pointed toward the bridge. The preamp is the Avalon AD2022, the converter is the UA2192. This is a raw recorded sound. The strings are fairly fresh, a couple weeks. This is also an MP3. Not a totally quiet space.

Sounds good. Captures the shimmer. As you know the right reverb added to this will add a bit more warmth and fill out the sound some more.

Nice acoustic guitar sound and very nice playing as well. The balance is a little strange in the headphones but for me stereo micing often is.

The kicker here is you've got a fair amount of room noise going and you've let it, for all the world to hear, build up dramatically in the front end of the tune (pre-tune). At that point my ears and brain have a firm grasp of recognizing it. Can't get rid of it at that point.

TRIM IT UP!!

The noise is from a refrigerator in the next room. Sometimes, when it is critical recording time, I unplug it. You can also tell it is a fresh set of strings.

Joseph, thanks for the comments! I just wanted you to hear the 814 recorded raw through my system. Every time I record this way, the stereo image is noticeably different from left to right. Each microphone is picking up different frequencies, so it seems unbalanced. I should try X/Y config and compare.

Ric, Ya you can hear the shimmer all right! It is interesting. I am experimenting with reverb and, as you stated, it really fills it out and adds warmth.

Joseph,

Actually, I haven't had much time to explore, but I do hope to have you help me out with freezing tracks using the Lexi PCM-92 Based on what you told me before, it seems simple with Logic. I haven't tried creating send/returns for FX yet. I like the Space Designer in Logic!

Very nice sound and great playing.

May I ask what kind of strings are on the guitar?

Thanks.

Do you know if they use PB or 80/20?

I've called Taylor twice with the same question and I've received different answers.

I think that they are 80/20 because of the silver appearance Vs the copper?

Rick, great playing! I think the recording quality is excellent. I hope my soon to arrive 714c is 1/2 as good as your 814c. Well done! More more more!
