Default went on an internet diet

Hi guys,

I dropped Facebook and the internet for entertainment in general. No more Facebook, Messenger, Linkedin, Soundcloud, Youtube, Google News, eBay, Reverb, etc. anymore. I unsubscribed to almost all email subscriptions so no more spam. I use the internet to email friends, check the weather and search for information when I think of something specific I want to look into i.e., the occasional google. 30 mins max a day now. I was wasting way too much time on my phone and it was also leading to stress (news) and a lot of soreness in my neck, arms and hands. It's been about 3 months now and I'm feeling much better.

BUT I still visit the AGF though I did take a 3 month sabbatical. The AGF is one of the few bright spots on the internet.

Has anybody else tried this? It's one of the best moves I've made in years.

Hi Doug,

Yeah, I did a 3-month sabbatical from here years ago. Sometimes downtime is good. We're very glad to have you back!

My breaks can't be complete just because of the work I do. I have to use Facebook via my work - administering commercial sites, and leadership in a volunteer organization.

TV news will stress me more than anything from my phone or computer because I can't tune out the inane stuff in the same way. As an example the computer or phone let me go right to Wall St. Journal, NY Times, and other quality news. I can skip emotive stuff and pundits when channel surfing will have that stuff shouting at you.

Even with my Apple News+ subscription that really is very fair and balanced I get the reminder of the stress or time suck. You see headlines that can be from a magazine, TV outlet or newspaper that are grabbing emotions.

Keeping up on my physical activities and a good diet do the most for sanity and well being.

Hello Doug,

We missed your contributions to show and tell, welcome back!

AGF is pretty much my only social media. From what I hear I don't think I'm missing much.

Sounds like you made a good move.

Hi Doug. Good move, imo. For the most part, I have always limited my internet use to how you’re now doing it, though I don’t set any time restriction. For me it all depends on need and what else I may be doing. The AGF is pretty much the only social media I do...no FB, no twitter, no instagram, no linked in..never had the inclination for any of that. I use the web mainly for info on special interests and research before making purchases.

Thanks guys. I should mention that I ditched my TV habit 17 years ago too. Another good move. I used to waste 3-4 hours a night in front of that stupid thing.

BUT I've been watching Stranger Things 3 lately. Love that show, right up my alley. My kids turned me onto it.

I was at Fur Peace Ranch with Woody Mann this past May and I'll be back with him in May 2020. The May 2020 class sold out in less than a day so was lucky to get a seat! I can only go once a year at this point in life.

Glad you’re still here, Doug.

I killed Facebook about 8 years back. While I was still gigging with my band, it was a great way to advertise. And I kept up with distant cousins, classmates, and so forth.

But I started watching old friends get into political fusses. And as a public employee, I started considering shrinking my digital footprint. So I pulled the plug. I don’t miss it much.

AGF I’m determined to stay with.

AGF is pretty much the only thing I use the internet for. I do not buy anything (I have never used Amazon even once, for example). I will look up something specific when I need to, but I log everything and over a month I average about 9 minutes a day. And it is very common that I will not be on-line at all for four or five days.

I worked in the tech field for years (being a network specialist and tcpip wiz). When I retired I went offline completely for three years. No internet whatsoever. I did not miss it.

I do not do social media in any form as I do not see any need for it. I do not consider AGF social media. Forums have a history going back to dirt. I suppose one could argue that forums are social media, but they do not seem that way to me. But if AGF IS social media, then my connection is in minutes, not hours.

I can not see me entering any other forum. I see no need. But it will be a while before I drop AGF. It is one of the best managed forums I have ever come across. Tek-Tips back in the day was pretty good, but now that I am no longer really a techie, I never go there.

I try not to limit my life by making decisions off hand concerning technology, or most things, without gaining some knowledge and experience about them. Boundaries and limits along with self awareness are good in about everything. I try to do what's good and positive for me. Dropping Facebook was good for me. I do understand the need for social interaction that is accomplished by technology. But at my age and my social needs I don't need to be involved in those things.
