It's all in how you speak. What difference does it make?

FWIW I have a friend from West Virginia who pronounces "color" (or "colour" for those here who speak the Queen's English) as "collar." I also have a friend from the Philadelphia suburbs who pronounces "water" as "WOOT uhr" so it's all geographic, heyna? (northeast Pennsylvanian for "isn't it?")

I asked someone where I could find San feh-LEE-pay and got a blank stare, then a question: "Oh...do you mean San FILLUP-ee?"

Everyplace has its own quirks when it comes to pronouncing names.

Not to mention the German influence here also....Gruene is not Gru-en it is Green. Borne is not Born, but Bernie, Blanco is not a short "A", but a long one Blainco...and get north of town and I swear it ain't a street unless the word Oak is in it somewhere. LOL

Haha ! Good point.

Common New England phonetics (where "OR" is pronounced "AW") really should have been AW' ruh gun or AW' ruh gone.

According to a cosmic rule, the number of consonants in the universe must remain the same. Hence, when a Bostonian pahks his cah, a North Carolinian warshes his car.

I got the same reaction when I was in Madras, Oregon. When I said it as the Indians do (re: Madras, India), as I lived in Madras (India) for a long time, I was very strongly corrected...by someone who did not even know there is Madras India. Shrug. Whatever. I am of the opinion that locals can pronounce things as they like.

Just like the guy who said it was the way they pronounced it, right here in the U_knitted States. Seriously. "knitted" as in the perl one yadda yadda knitting. Who is the furriner now?

If you think local pronunciations rule (and who is going to argue?), try visiting Newfoundland. It is hard to think of it as English.

re Post #1,

that's not "Color" as in "What's your favorite color?", it's "Color" as in "Colorado".
