Anybody also play non-stringed instruments?
Besides bass & mandolin I also dabble in a little piano myself.

I was a pretty serious reed player for years ('60s-'70s), alto & soprano sax, flute, bass clarinet in a college concert band. Still have a decent flute I pull out about once a year and promise to resuscitate my skills, but haven't yet. Used to play some piano, had a Casio keyboard for a while, but wound up giving it to a colleague whose daughter was interested in learning. May pick up another, like the flute, I have years of background on keys, so might not take too long to accomplish a little.

Recovering Drummer…
Church choir at 4. Piano (I hated) at 6. Then DRUMS, yay, at 7.
I was a full time singing drummer until I was 42. Then FINALLY got real busy on solo acoustic guitar…. Band leader, too for about 20 years, which is kind of an instrument, come to think of it. HAHAHAH I still play drums at home, but have zero interest in gigging them, even tho I have a killer little kit and some sweet congas, too. I also play harmonicas in the rack on about 30 or 40 percent of my hundreds of memorized songs. At least I think they are still memorized… Play on everyone and play the great ones! Paul

harmonica (diatonic) - used to play a lot of hohners when i mostly played electric guitar in my own instrumental blues band.
vibraphone - i just love this instrument, it sounds magical to me. taught myself how to play it, unfortunately i don't own one, i only get to play it in the studio which is owned by a friend of mine. i would love to buy my own vibraphone but the high end ones are crazy expensive and quite fragile. saxophone (alto & tenor) - again, taught myself out of admiration for the sound. piano - someone who used to teach me jazz played the piano, and taught me the basics, i then bought a korg digital piano and played it for a while. i don't really know why i stopped. i chose to practice the acoustic guitar instead, and right now i wouldn't consider myself a pianist or a saxophone player, since all i play is my acoustic guitar.. |

I play Anglo concertina. Kind of a fun diversion from guitar, mandolin, dobro and uke.

My first instrument was the trumpet at school, which I really disliked because of the physical pressure on my teeth and mouth. I then got into playing the flute after falling for Jethro Tull at age 14. The guitar came a little later at 16. I still play the flute occasionally, though it's been a while now.

I've been playing the guitar for almost two years. recently I bough a cheap keyboard to help with my singing lessons. My singing instructor is also providing keyboard lessons along with the singing lessons. I'm thinking about upgrading to a digital piano as I get more into it.

Drums and accordion. I often think that if I would have started as a drummer, and of course, stuck with it, I could have been pretty good at it. I'm blessed with a good sense of time, so that helps.
The accordion is a love/hate thing. Love the sound of a well tuned, quality accordion, but so hard to play. I have a 30's Wurlitzer that I had rebuilt and tuned to my specs. It is really cool. |

My first instrument was Piano before I started on Guitar a few years later. I concentrated on Guitar until 1970 and then got a Hammond Organ alternating between both in the bands I was in. I took up Flute when I was 45 and have kept up on it sporadically. Also got an Alto Sax, Irish Whistle, and Recorder. When I was 64 a friend gave me a drum set so I practiced on that and bought a new Ludwig Classic Maple Downbeat set a few years ago. Also got a Mandolin a few years ago. Now I'm mostly concentrating on fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar.

I play bass. In the studio I can make it work and not sound too guitar-ish. I studied electronic music so I play synthesizers but not in the 1980s Yamaha DX-7 "tink-tink-tink" sense. In fact, I don't really play keyboard. When I use them iIn pop music, what I do it more transitions and pads, such as this:
