Smile Baranik

Nice reading/review Deft, and congrats from the Southwest desert part of the multi-Baranik family. I am still loving my two Baraniks!

Happy holidays.

Have you narrowed down any of the details of your next build with Mike? Still going for a PXd? I played Juston's (now matthew's?) PX, albeit very briefly. Just to confirm the importance of scale length, I'll say that the PX is to the Meridian what the Retreux is to the 00m, a smaller version of a similar guitar. Now that I've experienced the difference, I'm totally stoked to have access to two different scale lengths. For variety's sake, you may want to give at least as much consideration to scale length as to the woods you select.
Looking like a 00d now. I've been distracted lately but I must get back to Mike about it. The neck length is something I am struggling with, as I know the shorter length can give me lower tension but so do the Newtone Heritage strings I enjoy so much on my walnut CX.

Thanks for the greetings, fellow family member!

Your "sick" cocobolo lies at the opposite end of the visual spectrum and is just as spectacular. Crazy spectacular, in fact! Glad to hear you're still in love.

Thanks, I am indeed very happy! (I thought I was spoiled before, now look at me!) It's so cool to have this kind of variety in the comfort of my own living room.

Is his current 00 box the same size as mine (15"), or is it smaller? I know he made some changes to the lineup after he discontinued the 00m a few years back. Phil has an 00 and an OM (the "Tree Twins"), but I can't remember what they look like or how big they are.

There's one thing I really wish Mike would do: update his website!

Also edit, check with Mike but I think the spalted trim on both our Meridians is actually Manchinga (whatever that is.)

It’s spalted sap koa. The rarest of the rare.

Didn't Mike use the last of his stash on this build or thereabouts? I know he's used spalted maple and manchinga for bindings since then, but they are more yellow than amber.

This spalted sap koa goes with the cocobolo like mocha and cream. All that 3D chatoyance koa is known for frames the enitre guitar in a drizzle of honey. So tasty!

Yes Deft, I believe Mike used the last of his spalted Koa on your Meridian bindings. I have seen spalted maple and machinga on his newer guitars, but there is something special about the look of the spalted Koa. My Black and Blue CX also has the spalted Koa bindings and it looks great against the African Blackwood back and sides.

Here is a photo of the spalted Koa bindings on my CX #08-136:

Congrats again Deft!

Ooooh, my, that's sweet! Because of your handle, and your "sick" guitar, I forget that you've also got Black and Blue to keep you company. Have you ever posted a comparative analysis of your two treasures? (If so, I may have read it at some stage but can't remember now...)

Anyway, the picture above gave me the nudge I needed to revisit Mike's pictures of your CX on his website.

http://www.baranikguitars.com/blackandblue.htm#

What a beautiful combination of timbers and accent woods! The black palm is outta sight, man!

He also used black palm to great effect on the Meridian currently on sale at Dream Guitars.

It's Colorado Blue Spruce over African Blackwood, just like yours. I love the blue faux turquoise accents, especially the purfling.

Perhaps Mike could use black palm or faux turqouise or spalted whatever every time, but he clearly chooses not to. I guess he approaches his guitars as a stand-alone compositions in color and texture, much like a painter would approach a blank canvas. Each one is a distinct work of art.

Trust me, it's tempting to spend just as much time looking at my guitars as I do playing them. Thankfully, once I pick them up, I forget how great they look and get lost in how great they play!

It's smaller DT, which is why I am going for it. Going to get a bevel too, to make it easier for my right shoulder.

Love seeing John's #136, as I have #137, also in ABW. Its binding is in jarrah, an Australian wood that Mike used for me. I'll post a pic when I can relearn how to use Imgur (they just reorganized the Imgur site - total disaster).

Makes sense, mine is a 2015 and it's spalted manchinga.
