Here’s real nice one from the first few years of Avalon – when Avalon and Lowden were built in the same Newtownards Ireland shop and by the same people.

This one is Alpine spruce and rosewood, all solid of course. Maybe someone who knows more than I do or can tell from the photos which variety of rosewood. Avalon aficionados might note that it has the "Made in Avalon" label with all the usual made in Newtownards features - typical for 2002. For those not familiar, an S-size Avalon or Lowden is between Martin size 00 and 000/OM, or like a Taylor GC. It's in in very good overall condition.

If you are looking for the tone of a hand made Irish guitar, you might like it a lot. It plays great and sounds great. The price has been discounted well in excess of what its inconsequential flaws might merit, making it a super bargain for someone not too picky about that sort of stuff. A great way to get a reputable handmade Irish guitar for cheap and a hellofalotta bang for the buck!

In response to previous questions, here are some dimensional specs:
Scale: 25.5" (long scale)
Nut width: 44mm, 1.73"
String spacing at nut: 38mm, 1-1/2"(like a Taylor with 1-3/4” nut)
String spacing at bridge: 56mm, 2-3/16"

You are correct. Currently, the guitar has a Taylor nut on it for a slight increase of string spacing at the nut, while fingering comfortably on the fretboard. I can include the original nut if desired to have both.

I think you mean the nut string spacing is 1-1/2”. The nut width should be 44mm or 1.73”.

What is the Avalon bracing like? I'm not too familiar with them, never having played one. Is the back lightly braced, or quite stoutly? Also the neck profile? Thanks...

Hi Tom - interesting questions.
For lack of a better term, I would describe the both the neck shape and back bracing as “modern average”. The neck is not extra skinny and not chubby either. You can feel body and back vibrations but not to any extreme degree.
The top bracing is more interesting. Avalon describes it as AXX. Going from neck to tail: A is the shape of the Angled bracing that is sometimes used by Irish and other guitar makers to make a strong neck support. The first X is the traditional steel string guitar main brace. The second X is in between the long legs of the main X, where a couple diagonal “tone bar” braces occur in most steel string guitars.
Whatever they call it, it works. The guitar is very stable and the tone is strong and punchy.
