wow, what an array - I once had a 000-16c oval that I should've hung on to, it sounded really good - it strikes me, looking at the photos, that the pickguard placement is somewhat variable? or are some retro-fits?

Thanks guys!

Cliff_the_stiff: I really enjoy all of them and they sound different, at least he 7 I've played to date. A the 0000-18 custom sinker mahogany (burst finish), MC-38 Steve Howe and OMC-28 are gorgeous. The Steve Howe has a different cutaway shape. The double cutaway with original Martin pickup/external knobs is quite cool and unique. I only thought there was the MC-28 besides Chris Martin's 1983 150th anniversary commemorative MC-45, but then found the DC-28 and said, "that's ugly" and started on my quest. When I got the DC-28 (dread cutaway oval), I actually liked it a lot and still do. They are all very cool. Now for the Koa MC-37K.......one more!

Eldergreene: No retrofits, all are original, and of the 9, (I'll see #8 tomorrow upon my return to town and #9 next week), 3 are mint that I have seen, 3 excellent and 1 good with the two I haven't seen looking like a Good and an Excellent.

Amazing collection. I am a huge fan of these oval soundhole Martin guitars! I only own one, but have never seen another like it - it is an MC-38 with vine inlay up the full extent of the fretboard. Gorgeous. I have been looking for a Steve Howe MC-38 for years, but have never seen one come up for sale. They must have been very limited production runs. Congrats - a collection to behold!

That is a great collection. I am curious, what is the relationship of the oval soundhole to the cutaway? My initial impression is that this is probably related in some way to gypsy jazz music, but I really don't know.

Default Why the oval sound hole on Martin guitars

Hi Cypress Knee!

Thanks for the question and kind words about the evolving collection of Martin oval sound hole guitars models.

Martin, in the early 1980's, was trying to be more relevant and wanted to a cutaway model. They built some prototypes and then released the MC-28 with the cutaway and oval sound hole. Martin could add 2 frets to the fretboard and used a 22 fret design. The longer fretboards, along with the cutaway and most importantly, moving the brace beneath the end of he fretboard to avoid the cutaway, necessitated an oval sound hole.

Oval sound holes date back 150 years or more to mandolins, bouzoukis, and of course Gibson mandolins of the early 1900's featured oval sound holes and "F" holes.

Some say oval sound holes help project the guitar sound further.

DJP,

I was wo during why this didn't appear in my Reverb feed until I quickly saw the incorrect model designation of M-38C instead of MC-38.

How did you find it?

I have the MC-38 SH (Steve Howe) and another AGF member, Hovaschaef wrote he has an MC-38 custom with elaborate vine inlay on fingerboard. He said he loves Martin ovals and has been looking for the Steve Howe MC-38. He wondered how many Howe rivals and there were 40 made. I would be interested in Hovaschaef'soval and the one you just alerted me about is interesting too. Looks like a nice specimen!

Find the MC-37K and new one I learned about yesterday, the predecessor to the JC-40 oval, the J-21MC. I know of an MC-37K but need the owner to get in the selling spirit.

I retrieve #9 in the next hour from UPS.

Thanks and good eyes!

Robbypad

Default Martin Oval #9 of 11 is in the house: PHOTOS HERE!

I am on a Martin oval sound hole guitar hunt. I bought #9 a few days ago and it arrived today! PHOTOS of the 9 OVALS below!

I just learned there is another production Martin oval that I didn't know about, the J-21MC. So, now I need TWO MORE Martin Ovals to complete the set of 11:

NEED TO FIND:

1) MC-37K (size 0000 cutaway in KOA with oval sound hole)
2) J-21MC

If you have an MC-37K or J-21MC or know of a friend or someone that does, please let them know there is a potential buyer for their instrument, should they be interested in selling it. I am also interested in any of these guitars if they are superior to what I have in the collection. Also, any special order ovals are of interest. There is one 12 string OMC out there and a few MC-38 customs I know of. I am not interested in the one currently on Reverb.

I've acquired these 9 ovals in a 42 day period since buying my first on February 26th:

1) DC-28 (dread cutaway with oval sound hole), 1983, EIR/Sitka
2) JC-40 (jumbo cutaway with oval sound hole), 1992, EIR/Sitka
3) MC-28 (think 0000 cutaway with oval sound hole), 1990, EIR/Sitka
4) OMC-28 (OM cutaway with oval sound hole....only made in 1990
5) 0000-18 Custom (0000 cutaway with oval sound hole; 1 of 2 bursts and 1 of 8 of this Special Edition oval hole, sinker mahogany run in 2018
6) M2C-28 1988 Guitar of mo. 2 cutaways with oval sound hole. Only 22 made
7) MC-38 Steve Howe Special Edition (1 of 40)
8) 000c-16 (000 size cutaway with oval sound hole in mahogany)
9) MC-68 (size 0000 cutaway, fancy, EIR and Maple versions were built)

Thanks,

Robbypad

Thanks Dylan...been fun hunt and I am enjoying the nine Martin ovals a lot, both playing them and visually enjoying their similarities, differences and uniqueness.
