Default Wide nut, short scale acoustic ?

Hi,

I'm on the search for a wide-nut, short-scale steel-string acoustic, 1 7/8" (47mm) width or slightly more and 23 or 24" scale. A shallow neck profile generally suits me.

I'll buy a used one as I can do set-up and repair work if it's needed, so discontinued models are fine.

Any suggestions ?

Sounds like you are looking for a Martin style size 0 or 00

As Martin have discontinued these now, I'd suggest you look at Blue ridge (budget) or Eastman, (medium) or Santa Cruz or Collings (Higher prices).

Not exactly your spec, but my 12 fret Collings 000 has 1 13/16 nut and shallow neck. Very easy playing finger style guitar.

With Emerald carbon fiber you can special order nut size to your specification. I did that with the small, short scale X7 (not quite as wide as you prefer, but getting there at 46.5mm). I am very impressed with the guitar, but you do have to take it on faith since they only sell from the factory. If interested, spend a little time on the carbon fiber forum to get a sense of how well these guitars are regarded.

Welcome to the forum.
It would be helpful to know if you have a price range.
In my experience the 1&7/8 nut, short scale steel string instruments are often made to be similar to vintage instruments so they have a neck profile that is not shallow but rather a V, modified V or vintage profile.
I’ll be interested if anyone can suggest a model that fits your desired specs.
Good luck with your search.

The Collings 000 has standard scale. their 00 and 0 has the 24.875" i.e short scale.

All have 1 & 13/16" nut widths. I'm not aware of any production steel strings with a wider nut than1 & 7/8"

The "VS" discontinued models (0,00,000) have 1-7/8" nut but a 24.9" scale length.

The Martin Vintage Series are discontinued but can be found used. The 000-28VS is a long scale (25.4"), 12 fret, with a 1 13/16" nut. The 0-28VS and 00-28VS are both short scale (24.9"), 12 frets, 1 7/8" nuts, and modified V neck profiles.

Martin still makes 0-18, 00-18, and 00-28 Standard Series models. All are 14 fret short scale guitars with 1 3/4" nut widths and Modified Low Oval neck profiles.

Martin also made the 00-17 Authentic 1931 and the 00-18 Authentic 1931, both now discontinued and very hard to find used (and expensive). Both are 12 fret, short scale, 1 7/8" nut widths, with V profile necks.

The Santa Cruz 00 nut width is slightly less than you are looking for (1.75") but scale length is 24.75". If it's in your budget, it is definitely worth a look. I think it offers impressive sound for it's size.

Check this out, on our classifieds section (no affiliation with seller, but seems like a great option):

I would recommend a 2012 or earlier Seagull dreadnought, or basically everything they made before that point was short scale with a 1.8 nut, other than the slim models that have a 1.72 nut. 2012 or 2013 Godin changed all their dreadnought (if you didn't know, Godin owns Seagull) guitars from short scale to long (or regular, whatever you want to call it). BUT, there is still one Seagull dreadnought model with the short scale (and 1.8 nut), I believe it's the Entourage.

Perhaps significantly, the Martin 0-28VS and 00-28VS have nut widths of 1&7/8 inches if made with standard specs.
I have seen custom models with the narrower nut.

Martin JR series is a 1 3/4 inch nut with a pretty fast profile and a 24 inch scale. Old Seagulls with a 1.8 inch nut had a 24.5 inch scale.
