Amp Placement
Hi, I'm looking to mic my guitar with a microphone. There are plenty of articles regarding placement of the microphone pointing at the guitar , but nothing regarding as to where to place the amp. I am a complete novice at this.
Thanks

Others will have more precise information but you'll want to keep the amp in front of the mic to minimize feedback.

Due to the high resonance of the guitar's body, the general rule of thumb is to have the amp a decent distance from the guitar, so as to minimize the tendency for the guitar to "pick up" any vibration/sound from the amp, interfering with clean, clear tones...
Using a mic is a bit more problematic than some sort of pickup system, but the rule remains the same. Personally, I WANT to hear what my audience is hearing; it's paramount for me to be able to hear what my guitar and vocals.; I'm not a fan of having the amp "out in front of me" for those reasons... When I use my AER Compact, I try to have it about 10-15' away from where I sit; I position the amp so that the main sound is going towards the audience, yet I'm sitting in the "edge" of the "dispersion cone" of the speaker's throw... this allows me to get a good amount of volume before encountering feedback from my guitar or voice. Start with a lower volume level and dial in the tone you want before trying to get louder. Small spaces are going to react more than bigger ones... if you're in your living room, all the dynamics will be far different than a larger space. It's up to you to compensate for the differences. Fortunately, it's a learnable skill-set. You'll get the hang of it! Oh, and IF you EVER point your mic at the amp, you WILL get serious sonic insubordination!!!

"Serious sonic insubodination"
Love it.. Mic on a guitar is always a challange. This is why most conversations You read here are around pickups and their use in live sound. General rule if thumb is get the Speaker as far away from the Mic as possible. The farther away The louder you can be before feedback. |

Thanks for your responses. It's basically for practice in a 10x10 room.

Given the room size then much will depend on how the sound from the amp reflects in the room. Experiment with placement and you'll find something that works for you.

I place my butt between the guitar and amp. Since I’m right handed this means the amp is on my left.
