I had a new 2008 Martin D-18 GE and it sounded powerful, crisp and clean. Its Adirondack top had a lot of compression wood and I never cosmetically bonded with the guitar. It got traded-in about a year or so later. Frankly, as best I can recall, my current 2016 Martin D-18 sounds better than I remember the 2008 Martin D-18 GE sounding. I think the main reason I wanted the D-18 GE was because it had an Adirondack (Red Spruce) top which made it more period correct to a 1930s Martin D-18. The new 2012 and newer Martin D-18 model is a wonderful instrument in every way, and I'd recommend auditioning one.

Yes
Last fall my buddy and I took a guitar safari to Nashville. We were both excited to go to Gruhn’s and play those sinker D-18s that everyone had been raving about. Well, we play over a dozen of them. Then we found a used GE on the wall. That GE sounded like the perfect vintage D-18 and blew away all those sinkers. We played a ton of amazing guitars that weekend. I still remember that one.

If I were going to buy a dread, and money wasn't an issue, that's the one I would buy. I once played a 1950s D-18 and it was phenomenal. I've played a couple of GE's and they didn't sound the same, but they did sound terrific.
I'm not a grasser or much of a flatpicker at all, so it's not worth it to me to have one -- and you can get a fine dread for a lot less money. But they are as good as you have heard.
