Default Pedal as preamp?

So, the guitar in question has a passive HFN Schatten sbt mounted pickup, and is a bit prone to feedback and be a bit bass-heavy. It seems to calm down when I connect it to an amp through a TC Helicon Harmony Singer pedal. Is there any pre-amp kind of magic happening here because of that pedal, or is it just my imagination (running away with me)?

All the SBT piezos are picky about not seeing too high an input impedance. Excessive bass is the symptom
